Funeral Director/Embalmer

Whitten Funeral and Cremations – Lynchburg, Virginia

Whitten Funeral and Cremations, located in Lynchburg, is a funeral home with three locations. Whitten Funeral Home is seeking a full-time Funeral Director/Embalmer. The management of the firm is handled by a team with over 80 years of funeral experience. The General Manager is a 3rd generation family member of the firm’s founder.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs on-call responsibilities including: taking first calls, talking with families, answering questions, providing initial details, and; conducting transfers
  • Supervises and cares for the deceased in a respectful manner while performing a variety of tasks such as: verifying identification; obtaining authorization for embalming; embalming; dressing, styling hair and/or applying cosmetics; preparing cremated remains
  • Arranges and conducts funeral and memorial ceremonies in a professional, organized and caring manner consistent with company policies and procedures
  • Negotiates and enters into funeral contracts
  • Handles contracts, legal documents, and collection of payment in accordance with company policies
  • Ensures client families are informed of special recognition/services available for veterans and ensures the delivery of selected recognition/services
  • Arranges for the interment or cremation of human remains
  • Supervises/assists in funeral services by: supervising the parking of cars; ushering; driving funeral vehicles; assisting at chapel and church services; assisting at the cemetery; delivering of flowers, caskets, urn, photos and other personal keepsakes or mementos of client families
  • Ensures adherence to all applicable professional, municipal, provincial/state and federal licensing authority, regulations and rules
  • Prepares and accurately completes documents and online entries related to services, cremations, maintenance
  • Retains heritage and grows market share through active involvement with community, religious and other organizations

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a dual degree training program at an accredited mortuary college or technical school specializing in funeral and mortuary science as required by state/province law and as prescribed by each state board
    Certification/Licenses

  • Must meet all licensing requirements in Virginia as required by law and as prescribed by state board
  • Current state/province issued driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of religious and fraternal organizations customs
  • Knowledge of computers and some software including MS Office products required
  • High level of compassion and integrity
  • Good communication skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ability to multi task and set priorities
  • Detail oriented

This position requires, teamwork, attention to detail, good written, verbal, and computer skills, compassion towards others, the ability to lift 75 pounds, high school diploma, wiliness to work weekends, and a valid driver’s license. All employees are subject to drug testing at time of hire and random testing thereafter as well as a background check as part of the application process.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of or currently enrolled in a dual degree or Funeral Director training program at an accredited mortuary college or technical school specializing in funeral and mortuary science as required by state/province law and as prescribed by each state board
  • Must meet all licensing requirements in applicable state/province as required by law as prescribed by each state board
  • Current state/province issued driver’s license with an acceptable driving record

Highland Funeral Service in Southwest Virginia is accepting inquires for a Virginia Licensed funeral director and Intern. Our mission is simple – treat every family as if they are your own family. Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Funeral Director/Embalmer is accountable for performing a variety of tasks during the preparation, planning, and execution of the funeral and memorialization process to ensure services run smoothly and that the expectations of our client families and their guests are exceeded. Position includes a 40-hour workweek with alternating weekend shifts, limited nights on call, with no night removals.

  • Consults with client families or legal representative of the deceased to create services designed to meet their memorialization expectations.
  • Ensures that client families are presented with all merchandising and service options available.
  • Obtains information needed to complete required documents such as obituaries, death certificates, burial permits, and insurance.
  • Coordinates all service arrangements and details with clergy, other presiding persons, fraternal or military organizations, and others who may participate in conducting the funeral service.
  • Utilizes systems to record merchandise selections, enter contracts, and complete forms.
  • Plans, schedules, and conducts visitations and services.
  • Oversees all employees participating in services, ensuring that each member of the team understands their individual role and is professionally representing the location.
  • Prepares the deceased, including dressing and casketing.
  • Places casket in visitation area, adjusts light fixtures, and arranges or supervises arrangement of flowers or plants.
  • Directs and ushers families and attendees to and from the location of the funeral service.
  • Supervises and assists in the transportation of clients to ensure a timely departure and arrival.
  • Arranges and coordinates shipment of remains to and from other cities and locations.
  • Instructs and oversees work of Apprentice Funeral Directors on services and paperwork.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Virginia Funeral Director License
  • 1+ year experience preferred, but newly licensed candidates will be considered.

The successful candidate must be extremely detail oriented, with a compassionate and caring attitude. We will train on our procedures.
