It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of                 

 

William  Beverley Mountcastle

 

age 90, of Alexandria, who died Sunday December 25, 2005 at Alexandria Hospital.

 

Mr. Mountcastle was President of Cunningham Funeral Home, and past president of the Alexandria Lions Club, Northern Virginia Funeral Directors Association, Virginia Funeral Directors Association, and the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers. He was also a member of the Potomac Lodge # 38 IOOF, Fraternal Order of the Eagles ALVA Lodge #871, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association, Friends of Mount Vernon, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., U.S.A., Alexandria Hospital Foundation Board and the Washington Street United Methodist Church. He was also a past District Governor for the National Funeral Directors Association.

 

Mr. Mountcastle was most proud of receiving the Julia Johns Award in June 2001 from the Alexandria Hospital Foundation and in 2005 receiving the Humanitarian Award from the Lions of Virginia.

 

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rennie H. Mountcastle. He is survived by his son, B. Earle Mountcastle and wife Margaret “Meg”, both past presidents of Virginia Funeral Director's Association, of Triangle; grandchildren, Lynne Mountcastle, Ret. Commander U.S. Coast Guard and William (Bill) Mountcastle, both of Florida.

 

The family will receive friends Thursday, December 29, 2005 from 2:00-4:00PM and 6:00-8:00PM with an Eagles service 7:00PM at Cunningham Funeral Home, 811 Cameron Street.

 

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 30, 2005 at 11:00AM.  Interment will follow at Ivy Hill Cemetery.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
                     Allen H. DeSchon

age 76 of Christiansburg who died Monday, December 12, 2005 at Westport Health Care Center in Richmond, Virginia.

 

Mr. Allen was born July 19, 1929 in Winchester, Virginia,  the son of the late Lena M. DeSchon. He was a mortician having proudly helped families in Winchester, Troutville, Roanoke, Fredericksburg, and the New River Valley.  He retired in 2004 from Horne Funeral Service in Christiansburg, where he worked for 16 years, completing a career of 50 years as a licensed funeral director. Mr. Allen attended  St. Paul United Methodist Church in Christiansburg. 

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverley Preas DeSchon, who died July 7, 2003, a sister, Betty D. Cochran, and two brothers, Louis March and Harvey L. DeSchon . Surviving are a son, Jeffrey A. DeSchon of Glen Allen; a sister, Iris D. Sibert of Winchester; two brothers William H. DeSchon of Winchester and Raoul H. DeSchon of Texas; and a grandson.

 

The family will receive friends at Horne Funeral Service in Christiansburg from 6:00 to 8:00PM on Wednesday, December 14, 2005, and at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester from 6:00 to 9:00PM on Thursday, December 15, 2005.

 

A graveside service will be at 11:00AM on Friday, December 16, 2005 at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Virginia.

 

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, your local fire/rescue squad or local humane society.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
                     E. A. Graybill, Jr.

age 95 of Troutville who died Thrusday, December 8, 2005.

 

Mr. Graybill served in the United States Navy during WWII. He and a friend bought Rader Funeral Home in 1946 where he was owner and operator for many years. He was a former President of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association and was honored for 50 years of service by that organization from 1946-1996. After selling the funeral home he continued to work there and remained Senior Advisor until 2003. Mr. Graybill was a natural born leader and served as Troutville's first mayor. He was instrumental in the incorporation of the town and the organization of the Troutville Volunteer Fire Dept. and Rescue Squad. He was a former member of the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors, Troutville Lions Club and a present member of the American Legion Post 240. Mr. Graybill was former President of the Botetourt County Chamber of Commerce where he received the 'Outstanding Citizen of Botetourt County' award in 1974. He held the longest membership and served as Trustee and Deacon of Troutville Baptist Church.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emory and Mattie Bane Graybill; brothers Horace and Theodore Graybill; and sister Ella Frances Graybill. Mr. Graybill is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lucille Painter Graybill of Troutville; son, Richard A. Graybill of Troutville; daughters, Martha G. and Dennis C. Morrison of Gainesville and Anne G. Vassar and Steve Snuffer, Jr. of Troutville; grandchildren, Belinda G. and Barry Edwards of Fincastle, Mary W. and Chad Paderick, and Andrew A. and Meredith Vassar, all of Troutville; great-grandchildren, Amy M. Silcox and Benjamin W. Silcox of Troutville, Sarah C. Edwards and Emily J. Edwards of Fincastle, Ramsey A. Vassar and Hunter M. Vassar of Troutville; also survived by brother-in-law and wife, Bland A. and Agnes Painter of Troutville and their children and grand-children and Joe Ellison of Hurricane, W.Va. who has been a part of the family for over 40 years.

 

The family will receive friends Saturday, December 10, 2005 from 6:00-9:00PM at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville.

 

Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 11, 2005 at 3:00PM at Troutville Baptist Church, 5520 Lee Highway, Troutville with Rev. Carol Johnston officiating. Interment will be private.

                     Patrick Scott Palmer

age 40 of Vienna who died Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at Virginia Hospital Center.

 

Mr. Palmer was the son of Harry Allen Palmer and the late Ilene Virginia Palmer. He is survived by brothers, Mark A. Palmer and Christopher D. Palmer; aunts, Patricia A. Pitts and Virginia Wolfe; his nephew, Matthew; and many cousins, friends and co-workers.

 

Mr. Palmer was a funeral director with Money and King Funeral Home in Vienna, Virginia.

 

The family will receive friends at Money and King Funeral Home in Vienna on Friday, December 2, 2005 from 7:00-9:00PM, and Saturday, December 3, 2005 from 1:00-2:00PM, at which time funeral services will be held. Interment to follow at Fairfax Memorial Park.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
        Joseph William “Tony” Preddy, Jr.

age 68 of Orange who died Monday, November 28, 2005 at Culpeper Regional Hospital.

 

Born December 6, 1936 in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Joseph William Preddy, Sr. and Mabel Holland Preddy. He is also predeceased by a daughter, Susan Minor Preddy. Mr. Preddy graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalmers and Funeral Directors in 1958. He was the senior partner and operator of Preddy Funeral Homes in Orange, Gordonsville and Madison. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Orange, a Charter Member of the Compassionate Friends, Piedmont Chapter, a member of the Orange Independent Masonic Lodge #138 AF&AM, and a member of the Orange Kiwanis Club. Mr. Preddy was appointed by the Governor of Virginia to serve on the Advisory Committee on Emergency Services from September 1972 to September 1976.

 

He is survived by his wife, Judith Minor Preddy of Orange; a son, Barry Anthony Preddy and fiancée Becky of Madison; a sister, Suzanne P. Nichols and husband Ralph of Orange; a grandson, Bryan Anthony Preddy of Madison; two step grandchildren, Bradley Wayde Goolsby and Marcus Tyler Goolsby of Madison; and loving companions, Nic and Scarlet.

 

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 30, 2005 from 2:00-4:00PM and from 7:00-9:00PM at the Preddy Funeral Home, 250 West Main Street, Orange, Virginia.

 

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2005 at 2:00PM at the Preddy Funeral Home, Orange, Virginia, with the Rev. Forest Porter officiating. Interment to be held at the Graham Cemetery in Orange, Virginia.

                     Emmett Mark Farris, Jr.

age 86 of Abingdon who died Sunday, November 27, 2005 at his home.

 

Born September 21, 1919 in Saltville, Virginia, Mr. Farris was the second oldest living past president of the Virginia Funeral Director's Association. He opened Henderson Funeral Home in Abingdon in 1952. In 1974, the family changed the name to Farris Funeral Service. Mr. Farris was a past president of the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers. He was a member and former Deacon of the Abingdon Baptist Church. He was a Blue Lodge Mason, being past master of the William King Lodge #227, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a Shriner and member of the Kazim Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. in Roanoke, a charter member of the Saltville Kiwanis Club, the Kiwanis International and Abingdon Kiwanis Club, the American Legion Post #12, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1994 and the McCabe Masonic Lodge #56 I.O.O.F.

 

He is survived by his wife, Sally Henderson Farris; three sons, David M. Farris and wife Barbara of Abingdon, William B. Farris and wife Mary of Wilmington, NC and Michael R. Farris and wife Kathy of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Beulah F. Slate and Ruth F. Buchanan both of Saltville; eight grandchildren, Kimberly Farris-Luke, David M. Farris II, Kelly P. Farris, Matt Farris, Dan Farris, Cary Farris, Michael Farris and Mariah Farris; ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 from 1:00-3:00PM and 6:00-9:00PM at Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, Virginia.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
                     Irene Lambert McMullen

age 83 of Harrisonburg, Virginia, who died Wednesday, November 9, 2005.

 

Mrs. McMullen was born on December 10, 1922 in Arborvale, West Virginia and was the daughter of the late Samuel Glen and Vivian Myrtle Wagner Lambert.  She spent most of her life in the Harrisonburg area and graduated from Linville-Edom School in  1941.  She was President and Vice President of the Linville Edom Home Demonstration Club now the FCE. Her work with the Citizenship Program received the 1st place award from the state in 1981. She served on numerous other county committees that brought honor to the club from the state level. She was also a member of the Church Women’s United and was loyal worker at the election polls as a volunteer.   She worked alongside her husband serving as Secretary-Treasurer at McMullen Funeral Home from the 1940’s as long as her health allowed in Harrisonburg and until 1990 in Bridgewater.   Mrs. McMullen was an active member of Greenmount Church of the Brethren where in the past she had taught Sunday School and served on many committees. 

 

She is survived by her husband, Charles L. McMullen, Jr.;son, William (Bill) McMullen and wife Brenda, Harrisonburg; three brothers,  Mervin Lambert and wife Janet, Harrisonburg; Bob Lambert and wife, Mary, Charlottesville; Dick Lambert and wife Odelia, San Diego, California; two sisters, Juanita Simmons, Harrisonburg; Kaye Simmons and husband Jay, Mount Airy, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Betty Anne Lambert, Harrisonburg; two granddaughters, Andrea McMullen Strawderman and husband Craig, Mathias, West Virginia; Amber Faith McMullen and Fiancé, David Richardson, Harrisonburg. Mrs. McMullen was preceded in death by two brothers, Sterle Lambert and Johnny Lambert and a sister and brother-in-law Anna Sue and Irvin Allen.

           

Friends may call at McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg at any time.

 

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 11, 2005 at 2:00PM at Greenmount Church of the Brethren. Pastors Ken Dolan and Wendell (Sonny) Henkel will officiate.  A private family burial will be held earlier.

                     Oscar F. Knowles, Jr.

age 86 of Chesapeake, Virginia, who died Monday, October 10, 2005 at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.

 

Mr. Knowles was the son of the late Oscar and Hattie Reed Knowles from Huntsville, Alabama. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a chief engineman after 25 years of service. He was a member of the Norview Masonic Lodge No.113 AF&AM, the American Legion, the Order of the Eastern Star, Norview Chapter 131, Fleet Reserve and Submarine Veterans of World War II.

 

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mildred J. Knowles of Chesapeake; three daughters, Cheryl K. Hemenway and husband Lawrence W. Hemenway, Jr., of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments and current President of VFDA of Chesapeake, June Brinkley of Suffolk and Terry Lynn Davis of Hooper, Utah; two sons, Kenneth Knowles of Bayville, NJ and James Knowles of Ogden, Utah; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

 

There will be an Order of the Eastern Star service in the funeral home on Thursday, October 12, 2005 at 7:00PM followed by visitation until 8:30PM at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel.

 

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, October 15, 2005 at 11:00AM at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel. Interment with Masonic rites and military honors will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk.

                     Mildred Urquhart Oakey

age 95 of Roanoke, Virginia, who died Monday, October 3, 2005.

 

Mrs. Oakey was a native of Roanoke, born October 4 1909 to the late John Hunter and Iraminta Booker Urquhart. She was a graduate of William & Mary College. Mrs. Oakey was a member of the South Roanoke United Methodist Church.

 

She was predeceased by her husband of sixty-three years, John Oakey, and by a son, Son G. Oakey, II. She is survived by a son, John M. Oakey, Jr. and wife Jean of Richmond; a daughter, Gayle O. Hancock and husband Tony of Bethlehem, PA; a daughter-in-law, Andrews H. Oakey of Roanoke; a sister, Margaret Brumfield of Stanford, CN; a brother, John H. Urquhart, Jr. and wife Betty of Roanoke; nine grandchildren, John M. Oakey, III of Richmond; Daniel L. Oakey of Charlottesville, Christopher K. Oakey of Richmond, Sam G. Oakey, III of Roanoke, Cynthia O. Bays of Richmond, Wyatt H. Oakey of Charlotte, NC, L.A. Hancock, Jr.-US Army, Keith O. Hancock of Bethlehem, PA, Kathryn H. Deborah J. West

age 46 of Thaxton, and formerly of Westminster, MD, who died Monday, September 26, 2005 as the result of an automobile accident. She was a member of the pre-need department of Oakey’s Funeral Service in Vinton.

 

Deborah, a loving and devoted mother, was born in Baltimore, MD. She was the daughter of Naomi Belleson and the late Albert Belleson. She was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda Renfro. In addition to her mother, Deborah is survived by her daughter, Jessie Layne West of Jordantown; two brothers, Wayne Brunk, Sr. of Berkeley Springs, WVA and Robert Brunk of Taney Town, MD; two sisters, Sandra Brown of Farmington, CT and Patty Brown of Silver Run, MD; several nieces and nephews; and her former spouse, Greg West of Jordantown.

 

The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 29, 2005 from 2:00-4:00PM and 6:00-8:00PM at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
                     Virginia Hudson Graves

of Norfolk, Virginia, who died Monday, September 5, 2005.

 

Mrs. Graves was a retired registered nurse until she and her husband, Frank purchased the Cox Funeral Home in 1955.  Born in Halifax, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late, Adie Belle Long Hudson and Thomas Melvin Hudson, and was the widow of Frank N. Graves, Sr.

 

Mrs. Graves was a graduate of Virginia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Lynchburg, Va.   She later, with her husband, until his death, and then her sons, owned and operated Cox Funeral Home until her retirement.  She was a licensed funeral director for over 40 years.  She was the first woman president of the Tidewater Funeral Directors Association and formerly served on the board of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association.  She was a loyal member of Epworth United Methodist Church, where she was a former “Class Mother” for the Wesleyman Bible Class, Elizabeth Chapter No. 45, Order of the Eastern Star, Women’s Club of Norfolk, Rebekah Lodge No. 13, I.O.O.F., and was a past president of the Norfolk-Virginia Beach Soroptimist Club, and the Norfolk-Virginia Beach Executives Club.

 

She is survived by her two sons, Frank N. Graves, Jr. and his wife, Peggy of Chesapeake and Bryan P. Graves and his wife, Pam of Norfolk; two grandsons, Frank N. Graves III of Chesapeake and Scott T. Graves of Portsmouth; and a host of loving and faithful friends.

 

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00AM. on Thursday, September 8, 2005 in Epworth United Methodist Church by Rev. Phyllis R. Earley.  Burial will be private in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
                     Vernie Ted Joines

of Chilhowie, Virginia, who died Sunday, August 21, 2005.

 

Mr. Joines was born in Smyth County, Virginia and had lived most of his life in the Riverside community of Chilhowie. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II and attended the Freedom tabernacle Baptist Church for many years. He was a farmer and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

 

Mr. Joines is survived by his wife, Judy Compton Joines; four sons, James H. Joines and wife Peggy of Chilhowie, Vernie Lee Joines and wife Virgie of Chilhowie, Larry W. Joines, with Farris Funeral Service and current First Vice President of VFDA, of Abingdon, and Eric Ted Joines and wife Sandra of Chilhowie; three daughters, Helen Joines Sage and husband Stanley of Longwood, FL, Reba Sue Baker and husband Glenn of Chilhowie and Mary Stuart Joines of Chilhowie; 17 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren and one step great great grandchild. Mr. Joines is preceded in death by a son, Robert Cleveland Joines; two brothers, Ervin and Clarence Joines and a grandson, Junior Joines.

 

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 after 6:00PM at the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church followed by song and praise at 8:00PM. Directions to church: Take exit 50 off I-81 (north bound turn right & south bound turn left at end of ramp). Turn right about 1 ½ miles at sign and another right about 1 mile.

                     David Willis Penland, Sr.

age 59 Dumfries, Virginia, who died Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at his home.

 

Mr. Penland was a licensed funeral director with the State of Virginia having worked for several funeral homes in the Northern Virginia area and most recently as the Manager of Price Funeral Home in Manassas.

 

He was preceded in death by his mother, Beulah Penland. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Bonnie L. Penland; three children, Corrie Samra and husband Chris of New Jersey, David Penland, Jr. and wife Marlene of Pennsylvania and Tara Green and husband Mike of New Jersey;  his father, Carroll Penland of South Carolina; two step-children, Aaron Smuzynski and wife Eileen of North Carolina and Damon Smuzynski of Texas; one sister, Nancy P. Gosnell and husband Ron of Virginia and five grandchildren, Brytney, Ella, Aris, Nicholas and Dyllin. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 & 7:00-9:00 P.M. Saturday, August 6, 2005 at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas, Virginia.

 

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 8, 2005 at Price Funeral Home with Rev. C.B. Owens, Pastor Shannon Ross and Father Edwin Perez officiating.  Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle military honors.

                     Carl Harvey “C.H.” Wilson, Jr.

age 64 of Matoaca, Virginia, who died Sunday, July 24, 2005.

 

Mr. Wilson was a native of Richlands, Virginia and the son of the late Carl Harvey Wilson, Sr. and Mary Kate Turner Wilson. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Wilson. Mr. Wilson was the manager of the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

 

He is survived by his wife Sylvia Adams Wilson of Matoaca; two sons, Rodney S. Butler and wife Lisa of Hideburg, Germany and Greg Wilson of Hatterus, NC; daughter, Jade Frashure and husband Bob of Chester; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Lou Shortridge of Richlands and Carlene Lacy and husband Rudy or Roanoke.

 

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 28, 2005 from 7:00-8:30PM at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 103 South Adams Street, Petersburg, Virginia 23803.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
                     Warren Garfield Kyger, Sr.

age 84 of Harrisonburg, Virginia, who died Friday, July 8, 2005 due to complications from cancer.

 

Mr. Kyger was born September 26, 1920 to the late Wilford Garfield and Clara Olivia Kaylor Kyger. He served as a Sergeant in the US Army Medical Corp for three years in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations during WWII. He later attended Bridgewater College and graduated from Gupton-Jones College in Nashville. Mr. Kyger moved to Shenandoah in 1950 and opened Kyger Funeral Home where he stayed until his retirement.

 

Mr. Kyger was a fifty-five year member of Fields United Methodist Church, a honorary life member of the Shenandoah Volunteer Fire Department, a charter and life member of VFW Post 8613 in Shenandoah, American Legion Post 222, a charter member and past president of the Shenandoah Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge, a charter member of the Newport-Grove Hill Ruritan Club, and charter member and first president of the Shenandoah Rescue Squad, and the Virginia Funeral Director's Association.

 

Mr. Kyger is survived by three sons; Kenneth D. Kyger and wife Sandra of Harrisonburg, Kyle Lee Kyger and wife Sally of Richmond, and Keith Ray Kyger and wife Deirdre of Ashburn; adopted son, Gary Comer and wife Patsy of New Market; brother, Miller Kyger of Weyers Cave; sister, Rosalie Stephenson of Armonk, NY; seven grandchildren, Susan Kile, Miranda Kyger, Travis Kyger, McKenzie Kyger, Shannon Kyger, Heather Kyger, Rebecca Kyger and Amanda Kyger; two great-grandchildren and a special friend, Alma Monger. He was preceded in death by a son, Warren G. Kyger, Jr.

 

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 from 6:00-8:00PM at the Kyger Funeral Home, 115 Nicholson Road in Elkton, Virginia.

 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday. July 13, 2005 at 11:00AM at the Kyger Funeral in Elkton by Rev. Stephen Creech and Rev. Ken Gullman. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery in Grottoes.

           Anna Margaret McQuade Morlino

age 87 of Portsmouth, Virginia, who died Saturday, July 2, 2005.

 

Mrs. Morlino was the widow of William Morlino, Sr., past president of the VFDA and former owner of Brennan-Morlino Funeral Home in Portsmouth. She was an associate member of the Tidewater Funeral Directors Association, an avid Duck Pin Bowler, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, Maryview Hospital Auxiliary, and a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church.

 

She is survived by her daughter, L. Lenora Morlino of Portsmouth, Virginia; two sons, Joseph V. Morlino of Hamilton, Ohio and William Morlino, Jr. of Morgantown, West Virginia; 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

 

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00AM on Wednesday July 6, 2005, in St. Paul's Catholic Church, Portsmouth, Virginia. Burial to follow in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth.
