It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of

Catherine Ketron Richard,

 

84, of Greensboro, NC, formerly of Pearisburg, VA, died Saturday, December 25, 2004.  

 

She was born in Lebanon, VA, to the late Frank Lafayette Ketron and Mary Catherine Gilmer Ketron.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Charles Rodney Richard, D.D.S. and her two brothers, William G. Ketron and Frank L. Ketron, Jr.  Surviving are her three children, Mary Carol Danahy and her husband Pat of Greensboro, NC, Charles Rodney Richard, Jr. and his wife Becky of Roanoke, VA, Robert Ketron Richard and Carol Joers of Lighthouse Point, FL.  Also surviving are grandchildren, James Patrick Danahy, Jr. and his wife Brantley of Atlanta, GA, Catherine Danahy Daniels and her husband Gary of Greenville, SC, Laurin Richard Young and her husband Steve of Roanoke, VA, and Charles Rodney Richard, III of Roanoke, VA; and three great-grandchildren, Keyton, Casey and Cameron Daniels. She lived most of her adult life in Pearisburg, VA and moved eight years ago to Well Spring Retirement Home in Greensboro, NC.  She was above all a dedicated, loving and special mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She and her husband, Rodney, were committed to the vitality and development of First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, VA.  She is currently a member of Irving Park Methodist Church in Greensboro, NC.  She was President of her Girl Scout Chapter and of her Women’s Society Chapter, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  At Well Spring, she was in the chorus and on the health and decorating committees.  Mrs. Richard was an avid golfer, accomplished bridge player and talented artist. 

 

Visitation will be Tuesday, December 28th from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg, VA.  Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 29th at 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg and burial will follow at Birchlawn Cemetery.  Pallbearers include Patrick Danahy, Rodney Richard, Gary Daniels, Steve Young, David Thompson, David Elijah Francisco, Frank Ketron, Dr. John Ketron, Philip Ketron, Dr. Fraid Dakermandji, Greg Danahy, Bill Danahy, and Dr. James Witten.

                     J. Bruce Sims

age 54 of Chesterfield, Virginia, who died Saturday, December 11, 2004.

 

Surviving are his wife, Beth C. Sims; two sons, Neil A. Sims and Christopher S. Sims; two daughters, Rebecca K. Sims and Mary Rachel Sims; a grandchild, Tejah Sims; four brothers, Clyde, Stuart, Thomas and James Sims; three sisters, Thelma Spivey, Hazel Pruden and Shirley Pruden.  Mr. Sims is the son-in-law of Martha and John W. Welch, II of Welch Funeral Home in Warsaw, Virginia.

 

The family will receive friends on Monday, December 13, 2004 from 6:30-8:00PM at the Bliley Funeral Home, 6900 Hull Street Road, Richmond.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
                     Fred Claude Forberg

age 85 of Richmond, Virginia, who died Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at his home.

 

Born August 15, 1919 in Minneapolis, Minn., he was the son of Hartvig Forberg and Mary Jeane Hutchings Forberg, both deceased. He relocated with his family to Richmond, Va. in 1927. In his early years, he was a Richmond Newspaper carrier. He was a graduate of Westhampton High School, Henrico County, and earned a B.S. degree in business administration from University of Richmond in June 1942. Upon graduation and after Pearl Harbor Day, he joined the U.S. Navy. He attended midshipman's school at Columbia University in 1943. He was commissioned an ensign and was assigned to the USS Lexington, CV-16. He was chosen to attend post graduate school at the U.S. Naval Academy in June 1945. He retired from active duty in December 1945. He joined the Virginia Department of Taxation Commonwealth of Virginia as a real estate appraiser in early 1946. He served as department division director until December 1984. He was a charter member of the Virginia Association of Assessing Officers and served as their president in 1960. He served the Department of Taxation for 47 years and traveled extensively throughout Virginia assisting local governments with their reassessments and valuation of real estate property. He ended service as the assistant state tax commissioner in 1992. He was a member of River Road United Methodist Church, formerly Broad Street Methodist Church. He was chairman of the Church Building Committee in the early 1960s, overseeing the River Road Church Building Program and Relocation construction. He served his church in many capacities including the administrative board, church trustee, UMYF counselor, and was involved in the construction program of an additional education building in the 1970s.

 

He was preceded in death by a son, the Reverend Andrew H. Forberg, Virginia Conference, United Methodist Church (1978); two brothers, Hartvig D. Forberg, of Paducah, Ky. (2002) and Lt. Col. (Retired) Edwin G. Forberg of Harper, Texas (2003). He is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Mary Daniel Lovern Forberg, of Midlothian, Va., whom he married on February 19, 1943; daughter, Christie F. Freeman, and her husband, Dr. Mark J.P. Freeman, DDS, of Mechanicsville, Va.; two sons, Fred C. Forberg, and his wife, Susanne W. Forberg, of Baskerville, Va., and Mark L. Forberg, former VFDA Resource Consultant of Richmond, Va.; sister, Jeane F. Squires, of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

 

The family will receive friends from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Friday, December, 3, 2004 at the Bliley Funeral Homes' Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave.

Funeral services will be held 2:00PM Saturday at the River Road United Methodist Church, 8800 River Road. Interment will follow in Hollywood Cemetery.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
                     Dora Martin Adams

age 87 of Bassett, Virginia, who died Monday, November 22, 2004 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

 

Mrs. Adams was born in Rockingham County, North Carolina on October 5, 1917 the daughter of the late Elder Benjamin H. Martin and the late Mary Susan Hopkins Martin.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Lemly J. Adams; four sons Elwood “Woodzie” Adams, Paul Adams, Dale Adams and Tim Adams; 2 daughters Joan Marie Adams and Linda Sue Adams; stepmother Dovie C. Martin; three brothers King E. Martin, Willie H. Martin and one infant brother; and one sister Ellen M. Adams.   She was a member of Liberty Primitive Baptist Church for 37 years. 

 

Surviving are her daughter Doris Hudson of Bassett; four sons John Adams of Bassett, Carl Adams of Ferrum, Noel Adams of Bassett and Daniel Adams of Bassett; three brothers Harry Martin of Bassett, Benny Martin of Bassett and Jerry Martin of Martinsville; 16 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and 3 step grandchildren.  Her grand daughter and husband, Kathy and Wayne Handy are employed with Bassett Funeral Service.

 

Visitation was held Tuesday, November 23, 2004 from 7:00PM to 8:30PM at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel.

 

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at 2:00PM at Liberty Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder John Wingfield and Elder Carl Terry officiating with burial at Old

Center Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
                     Joyce St. John Garrett

age 70 of Lynchburg, Virginia, who died Sunday, November 21, 2004.

Mrs. Garrett was born September 5, 1934, in Charlotte County, a daughter of the late John F. St. John and Oshie Mae Vaughan St. John.  Joyce was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church and the Stedfast Bible Class.  She was a retired administrator and owner of St. John’s Nursing Home.  In later years, Joyce returned to work as a secretary at Health Care Consultants until her retirement in 2000.

 

Mrs. Garrett is survived by her husband of 37 years, John Ryland Garrett with the Dodge Company; her daughters, Donna T. Foster and Sharon Tucker, both of Lynchburg; two sisters, Shirley S. Dearing and Norma Jean Staples, both of Lynchburg; a brother of Lynchburg; and a number of nieces and nephews including one very special nephew, Luke Paulette of Appomattox.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 23, 2004 from 7:00 – 9:00PM at Tharp Funeral Home. 

 

A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, November 24, 2004, at 1:00PM at Tharp Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Jerry Falwell and Rev. Homer Massey officiating.  Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

                     Eugene “Gene” Joseph Backe

age 68 of Culpeper, Virginia, who died Monday, November 15, 2004 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Mr. Backe was born October 17, 1936 to Hobart Joseph “ H.J. “ Backe and Mable Fairy Burke Backe. Mr. Backe served his country in the United States Army and then worked in the trucking industry retiring from Penske in 2000. 

Mr. Backe is survived by his wife of 51 years Daisy West Backe of Culpeper; daughter Peggy Jo Backe English and husband Wayne, owner of Clore-English Funeral Home of Culpeper; sons John Robert Backe and wife Cindy of Culpeper and Eugene “Bo” Joseph Backe, Jr. and wife Donna of Boston; five grandchildren, Kristen Jo Privett of Crozet, Kenneth Garrett Backe of Culpeper, Caytlin Janelle Backe of Culpeper, Skylar Lynn Backe of Boston and Ciera Jo Backe of Boston; sister Peggy Backe Mills and her husband George of Culpeper; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family also survive him.  Preceding Gene in death are his parents, son Kenneth Burnette Backe, brother John Robert Backe and sister Lillian Katherine Backe.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 12, 2004 from 6:00 until 8:00PM at Clore-English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Highway, Culpeper, Virginia 22701.

                     Marjorie Brooks Foster

of Cobbs Creek, Virginia, who died Thursday, September 30, 2004.

 

She was a retired Funeral Director, a member of Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #30. 

 

Mrs. Foster was predeceased in 1975 by her husband, Wilbert T. Foster, Co-Founder of Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, her parents, William James and Ruby Rose Brooks and her brother, Gilbert Graham Brooks.  She is survived by two sons; James Sheldon Foster of Cobbs Creek and Thomas W. Foster of Mathews, seven grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

 

The family will receive friends on Friday, October 1, 2004 from 7:00-8:30PM at Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church, Cobbs Creek, Virginia. 

 

The funeral service will be held at the church on Saturday, October 2, 2004 at 2:00PM with burial to follow at H. C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins, Virginia.

Landon “Jay” Collins

age 83 of Pulaski, Virginia, who died Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at Pulaski Community Hospital.

 

Mr. Collins, born in Bristol, TN, was the son of the late Leana Mahady Collins and Jessie Wiley Collins.  He was employed by Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home in Pulaski, Virginia.  He was a veteran of WWII having received 4 Bronze Stars, a member of the Memorial Baptist Church, a member of the Pythagoras Masonic Lodge #239 A.F.&A.M., a member of the Pulaski Royal Arch Chapter, a member of the Scottish Rite Shriners as a 32nd degree Mason, a founding member of the Kazim Shrine Characters as the first kangaroo, a member of the Pulaski Elks Lodge, a life member of the Hillsville Grover King VFW Post 1115, a member of the American Legion, a member of the Eastern Star where he proudly served in most all areas including Past Patron and Delegate to many states representing the Eastern Star of Virginia. 

 

Mr. Collins was preceded in death by hi parents, four foster sisters, one foster brother, four half sisters, and two half brothers.  He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Fannie Cline Collins of Pulaski;  a sister-in-law, Willa Mae Cline of Pulaski; a niece, Judy McNutt Thompson of Knoxville, TN; a nephew, Sam McNutt and his wife Alice of Lexington, S.C.; a nephew, Denver Cline of Anderson, S.C., a niece Connie Tate and her husband David of Clearwater, FL; and a nephew Alvin Collins of Richmond, Va.  Also survived by many great nieces and great nephews. 

 

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 17, 2004 from 5:00-8:00PM at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home.  The Order of the Eastern Star will conduct an evening memorial service at the funeral home at 8:00PM, and the public is invited. 

 

A funeral will be held Saturday, September 18, 2004 at 11:00AM at the Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. David Lones officiating.  Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens where the

Pythagoras Masonic Lodge will conduct graveside rites.

 

Flowers will be accepted, but for those who wish, memorials may be made in the memory of Mr. Collins to any Shriners Children’s Hospital, or to the Memorial Baptist Church New Building Fund.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
                     Otis Braxton Theis, Jr.

age 91 of New Market, Virginia, who died Monday, September 13, 2004 at Mayfair House in Woodstock. 

 

Mr. Theis was the son of the late Otis Braxton Theis, Sr. and Lillian Schaeffer Theis.  After graduating from Echols College of Embalming in Philadelphia, PA, Mr. Theis was the fourth generation in his family to operate the Theis Funeral Home in New Market, Virginia established in 1849 by his great-grandfather.  Mr. Theis retired from funeral service in 1975.

 

Mr. Theis was a member of the Reformation Lutheran Church.  He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons – Shenandoah #17, ACCA Temple in Richmond, past member of Valley and Caverns Shrine Club and a past Rotarian, and a charter member of the New Market Volunteer Fire Department.

 

Mr. Theis is predeceased by his wife Hilda Mae Pence Theis.  He is survived by two children, Richard Braxton Theis and his wife Deidre of Williamsburg, and Janet Theis Dellinger and her husband Blair of New Market; three grandchildren, Adam Braxton, Brandon Christopher and Logan Bartley Theis; and a number of nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 from 7:00-9:00PM in the Theis Funeral Chapel, 9377 Congress Street, New Market, Virginia 22844.

 

A funeral will be held Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at 1:00PM at the Reformation Lutheran Church.  The Rev. C. Bernard Troutman will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Saint Matthew’s Cemetery.

Annie M. Bond Overton

age 88 of Chesapeake, Virginia, who died Thursday, September 9, 2004 at Autumn Care Nursing Home. 

 

Mrs. Overton, born in Chowan County, North Carolina, was a member of Piney Grove AMEZ Church in Tyner, North Carolina.  She served as a member of the Choir, a Deaconess and President of the Missionary Board. 

 

Mrs. Overton was predeceased by her husband, John T. Overton, her son, John W. Overton and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Atkins.  She is survived by three sons, Howard of Raleigh, North Carolina, Lloyd and his wife Edna of Portsmouth, Virginia and Wayne and his wife Barbara of Queens, New York; five daughters, Jane Valentine, Doris Gordon, Jessie Morgan and Cora Overton and her husband Tom all of Chesapeake and Rev. Frances Overton of Fayetteville, North Carolina; eight grandchildren and great grandchildren; one sister, Dora Bond Freeman of Chesapeake; one brother, Lloyd Bond and his wife Kelsey of West Virginia; many nieces and nephews and extended family members.

 

The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 12, 2004 from 12:00-7:00PM in the Chapel of T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home in Suffolk.  Wake service from 6:00-7:00PM.

 

A funeral will be held Monday, September 13, 2004 at 1:00PM at Piney Grove AMEZ Church in Tyner, North Carolina.  Interment at Piney Grove AMEZ Church Cemetery.  Funeral Procession will leave from T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home at 11:00AM.  Bus service will also be available.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
                     John Joseph Monaghan

age 83 of Mechanicsville, Virginia, who died Thursday, August 5, 2004 at his home.

 

Mr. Monaghan was retired from the Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home with 27 years of service.  He was a supervisor at the time of his retirement, and was a former manager of the Chippenham location.

 

Mr. Monaghan was preceded in death by his son, Joe.  He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marion; his daughters, Mary Amann and her husband Bob, Suzie Cecchini, Cindy Caison and her husband Mike, Theresa Monaghan and Barry Davis, Kelly Austin and her husband Joe; his sons Jerry, who is the manager of the Augusta Avenue location of Joseph W. Bliley, and his wife Catherine, Kevin, who is employed by Joseph W. Bliley, and his wife Meredith, and Stephen and his wife Lisa; brother, Edward Monaghan; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. 

 

His sons Kevin and Jerry Monaghan are also the owners of Hanover Memorial Park Cemetery in Mechanicsville, Virginia. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 6, 2004 from 4:00-8:00PM, with a Christian Wake at 7:00PM at Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Avenue, Richmond, Virginia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 10:00AM at Catholic Church of the Redeemer.  Interment to follow at Hanover Memorial Park.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
                     Leon P. Sampson

age 78 of Gloucester, Virginia, who died Saturday, July 31, 2004.

Mr. Leon P. Sampson was employed with Whiting's Funeral Home in Williamsburg, Virginia.  He and his wife Christine own Howard Funeral Home in Ark (Gloucester Co.), Virginia.
  
Mr. Sampson was a member of First Baptist Church-Hockley where he served as a Deacon, member of the Music Department and other ministries of the church. He was active in several civic organizations and a United States Army Veteran. He was a retiree of the Naval Weapons Station-Cheatham Army, Williamsburg, Virginia.

 

He is survived by his wife of 37 years Christine L. Sampson; son, Robert F. Lemon (Lisa); three daughters, Cassandra M. Lemon, Brenda L. Gwynn and Rev. Lisa M. Sampson; three grandchildren, Nicole, Dana and Gina Lemon; and a host of other relatives and friends.

 

The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 5, 2004 from 12:00-3:00PM at Howard Funeral Home, and on Friday, August 6, 2004 from 6:00-8:00PM at First Baptist Church-Hockley. The funeral services will be held Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 11:00AM at First Baptist Church-Hockley with the Rev. Keith L. Parham officiating.  Burial will follow with military and Odd Fellow rites in the church cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Howard Funeral Home.

                     Ann Tucker Crews

of South Hill, Virginia, who died Thursday, July 29, 2004.

 Mrs. Crews was the widow of Robert H. “Bobby” Crews, Jr. and the daughter of the late John Lewis and Laura Spencer Tucker; sister of Mary Hendrick of Charlotte, North Carolina, John Tucker of South Hill, Virginia and Robert Tucker of Rhodes Island.

 

Mrs. Crews was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church.  She and her late husband, Bobby, operated Crews Funeral Home in South Hill, Virginia for many years. Mrs. Crews is survived by a daughter, Laura Martin and husband Jim of Glen Allen, Virginia; a son, Robert H. Crews, III and wife Kelly of Charleston, South Carolina; seven grandchildren and a great grandchild.

 

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 31, 2004 from 2:00-3:30PM with funeral services following at 4:00PM at All Saints Episcopal Church.  Graveside service will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.  The Rev. Shawn Griffith officiating.

It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of
                     William J. “Bill” Edwards

age 80 of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, who died Saturday, July 17, 2004.

Mr. Edwards was a member of Benns United Methodist Church where he was Sunday School Superintend for many years, sang in the choir and was also head usher for over 40 years.  Mr. Edwards was a member of Smithfield Union Masonic Lodge, and had served on the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors, and he also served as President of Smithfield Elementary Scholl PTA.

 

Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife of 57 years, Viola Skinner Edwards; his daughters, Ann Edwards Andrews and husband Jerry of Gloucester and Robin Edwards Whitley of Smithfield; his grandchildren, Joseph Whitley, Hope Andrews, Jeri-Lee Andrews and William Whitley.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at 3:00PM at Benns United Methodist Church in Smithfield, Virginia.  Burial will be in St. Luke Memorial Park.

                     Lynwood Harrison Mize

age 61 of Bassett, Virginia, who died Friday, June 18, 2004.

Mr. Mize is survived by his wife, Nancy Pickurel Mize and his father Russell J. Mize of Bassett VA; sister Louise Lovely of Brevard, NC; and three nieces.

He was a long time Virginia Funeral Director presently employed by Maberry Funeral Home in Floyd.  He was a member of UTC, Knights of Pythias and Moose Lodge and active in the Republican Party.

 

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 19, 2004 from 6:00-7:30PM at the Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd with a brief service to follow with Rev. Roy Turpin & George Smith officiating.  A graveside service will be held at 2:00PM, Sunday, June 20, 2004 at Old Center Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Bassett with Rev. Ron Gore officiating.

                     David Lawrence White

age 82 of Roxboro, North Carolina, who died Saturday, May 29, 2004.

Mr. White was born in Person County to the late Cyrus Clifton and Vivian Lola Oakley White.  He was a WWII Army Veteran having served and was wounded on Anzio Beach Head in Italy in 1944.  For his service in the Army he received the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.  Mr. White was a partner with his brothers CJ and Jack of Brooks & White Funeral Home.  He was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church.  He was also a member of Elks BPO Lodge NO. 2005.

 

Mr. White is survived by his wife, Eloise Rimmer White; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Dr. John R. Bradsher and Laurie and Robert C. Wrenn; granddaughters, Mary Kelsey and Anna MacKenzie Wrenn all of Roxboro; brother, Kermit White, General Manager of Swicegood Funeral Home and Barker Funeral Home in Danville, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Monday, May 31, 2004 from 2:00-4:00PM and 7:00-8:30PM at Brooks & White Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service will be held 11:00AM on Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Brooks & White Chapel with the Rev. Herbert Brown officiating.  Burial will be in the Burchwood Cemetery.

Gilligan, Jr., and the late Jeanne Derrick; 21 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces.

Mass of Christian burial will e held Saturday, May 29, 2004 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Hyde Park at 10:00AM.
