It is with sincere regret that we advise you of the death of

            Thomas (Tom) Woods Patton

Thomas (Tom) Woods Patton, age 74, of Farmville, NC passed away Monday May 5, 2008 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC. He is survived by his wife, Laurel and daughter Bess of the home, daughter Kim P Hicks, husband John and grandson Cole of Sarasota, FL.

Thomas (Tom) retired from The Embalmers' Supply Company with over 28 years of service as a Sales Representative. He was a member of the Virginia Funeral Directors Sales Association until his retirement. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday 2 PM May 7, 2008   at Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Mebane, NC. In lieu of flower donations may be made to the Farmville Rescue Squad.

Robert Franklin Shim (Franky) Hazelgrove

Robert Franklin Shim (Franky) Hazelgrove, 14, of Mechanicsville, went Home peacefully on Thursday, April 24, 2008.  Franky was a 9th grader at Lee Davis High School, where he proudly played in the Marching Band.  He was also a member of Boy Scout Troop 503 and attended Black Creek Baptist Church, where he came to know and love his Lord.  He is survived by his parents, Tochi and David Metcalf,  Mark and Carol Hazelgrove; his sisters, Ashley Hazelgrove and Zoey Metcalf, brothers, Stephen Metcalf and Sam Gomez; his grandparents, Robert (Bud) and Shim Hazelgrove, Hien and Moui Tu and his great grandparents, Mr and Mrs Vinh Tu;  also many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.  His family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-8 PM Friday at Black Creek Baptist Church, 6289 McClellan Road, Mechanicsville, where a celebration of his life and homegoing will be held Saturday at 2:00 PM, with interment to follow in the church cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Franky’s name to the Lee Davis Band Boosters.  Condolences may be made at www.MeM.com.

It is with sincere regret that we advise you of the death of

            Walter F. “W.F.” Strickler

Walter F. “W. F.” Strickler, 80, husband of Virginia (Rosen) Strickler, of Staunton, died Wednesday morning (April 23, 2008) in his residence.

He was born June 22, 1927 in Augusta County, a son of the late Robert Wallace and Mary Helen (Evans) Strickler.  He was a U. S. Naval veteran of World War II.

Mr. Strickler was a licensed Virginia funeral director and embalmer for 57 years.  In 1969 he became the Assistant Manager of Henry Funeral Home and was made Vice-President in 1984, prior to retiring in 1996. 

He was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, the Middlebrook Ruritan Club, and the Staunton Jaycees. 

In addition to his wife of 58 years, to whom he was married on April 8, 1950, family includes two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark R. and Katherine Lee Strickler of Locust Grove and David M. and Melodie Lynn Strickler of Staunton; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane S. and Roger D. Mooney of Charleston, WV; a brother and sister-in-law, Wallace A. and Elizabeth M. Strickler of Greensboro, NC; a sister, Betty J. Comer of Stuarts Draft; six grandchildren, Mark R. “Skip” Strickler, Jr., Lee Anne Barr and her husband, Jon, Virginia Joanne Strickler, Bethany Kaye Strickler, Marisa  Hope Strickler, and Sarah Virginia Berry Ann and her husband, Nathan; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine A. Shover.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday (April 26, 2008) in the Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church by the Rev. JoAnn Bunn.  Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be R. G. Heizer, Thomas Hanger, Dr. Samuel Rowe, Donald Hanger, Mike McCray, Nathan Berry Ann, Jon Barr, Jack Root, and James Custard.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Thompson, Dr. John Marsh, B. B. Hanger, Sam Heizer, Howard Sensabaugh, Harry McCray, Gary Rosen, Philip Rosen, Sam Heizer, Mark R. Strickler, Jr., and Roger Mooney.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. today (April 25, 2008) in the Henry Funeral Home and at other times at his residence.

It is with sincere regret that we advise you of the death of

James Andrew Riffe, Sr.

James Andrew Riffe, Sr., 69 of Narrows passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in the late hours of Friday night, April 18th, 2008 at his home.

 

A lifelong resident of Giles County , he was born on November 9th, 1938 and was the son of the late Hedley Lewis and Claire Mabel Tipton Riffe. 

 

From a young age, Jim served his community in a number of different endeavors.  A 1957 graduate of Narrows High School and a Fall 1960 graduate of Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, he served as the President and Manager of Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows, caring for thousands of families in their times of loss.  Jim was a faithful member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows where he taught Sunday School and served as a Deacon, Elder and Chairman of the Board.  He was a charter member of the Giles Lifesaving and Rescue Squad, and served in the Narrows Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years as an Assistant Captain, Chaplain, and a Purchasing Agent.  Jim also served on the Giles County 911 Formation Committee and the New River Community College Board of Directors.  He was the first president of the Narrows Business and Professional Association, a past-president of the Narrows Lions Club, a past-president of the Blue Ridge Funeral Directors Association, and served the Virginia Funeral Directors Association on the Legislative Committee, Disaster Response Committee, and on the Board of Directors.  But he will best be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather to his family and simply as, “Button,” the nickname he lovingly earned from his grandson.

 

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 43 years, Allie Smith Riffe of Narrows; a son, James Andrew Riffe, Jr. and wife Joyce of Narrows; a daughter, Andrea Ann Riffe of Cornelius , North Carolina ; a grandson, Tyler Andrew Riffe; a sister, Rebecca Straley and husband Don of Eggleston; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

 

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 at 2 PM at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows with The Rev. Dennis Martin officiating.  Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Narrows .  The family will receive friends at First Christian Church, 605 Memorial Boulevard in Narrows Monday from 5 to 9 PM .  The family requests that those sending memorial contributions, please consider First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows to be earmarked for the Memorial Fellowship Hall and Kitchen Renovation Project.  Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg and Wickline Funeral Home in Lindside are assisting Riffe’s Funeral Service with arrangements.  Online condolence messages to the family can be sent to www.riffes.com.

Charles L. McMullen Jr.

Charles L. McMullen Jr., 85, a resident of 6025 Rocky Lane, Harrisonburg, died March 21, 2008, at Oak Lea Nursing Home, where he had been resident for three months.

Mr. McMullen was born on Dec. 9, 1922, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late Charles L. and Ollie C. Shiflett McMullen.  He graduated from Linville Edom High School in 1941. He served in the United States Navy during World War II being stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. and was a member of the American Legion. Mr. McMullen graduated from the Eckels College of Embalming in 1943 and began working with his family at McMullen Funeral Home as the third generation of that business and he remained a licensed funeral director until the time of his illness.  In 1951, he and his father also began McMullen Funeral Home in Bridgewater and he continued to operate that business along with his son and family until 1990.  In 1994, he received the Golden Funeral Service Award for 50 years service as a Virginia Funeral Director from the Virginia Funeral Directors Association.

Mr. McMullen was a member of the Linville-Edom Ruritan Club and the Greenmount Church of the Brethren.  On Jan. 10, 1944, he married the former Irene Lambert, who preceded him in death on Nov. 9, 2005.  Surviving are a son, William (Bill) McMullen and wife, Brenda, Harrisonburg; two granddaughters, Andrea M. Strawderman and husband, Craig, Mathias, W.Va. and Amber F. Richardson and husband, David, Broadway; a great-granddaughter, Natalee Christina Strawderman.

The Rev. Ken Dolan will conduct a graveside service at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at the Singers Glen Cemetery.  Friends may call at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg, at any time.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Singers Glen Cemetery, 9932 Wills Creek Road, Linville, VA 22834.

BLILEY, Jean Berkeley, 58, died February 14, 2008. She is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Norbert Michael Bliley; her son, Michael Carey Bliley and his wife Jennifer Ann Bliley; her grandson, Joshua Graham Bliley; her parents, Harold Carey Berkeley and Jane Grey Berkeley; her sister, Peggy Lou Berkeley and her son, Ryan Berkeley Martin; her sisters-in-law, Catherine Bliley Wright and her husband, Bruce Roger Wright, Mary Thomas Bliley, Margaret Bliley Wilkins and her husband, Robert Anthony Wilkins, and The Rev. Cecilia Bliley Duke and her husband, David Hughes Duke; her brothers-in-law, Daniel John Bliley and his wife Frances McCracken Bliley and Nicholas Martin Bliley and his wife, Patricia Saunders Bliley; and her many nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends. Jeanie was a Past President of the Ashland Junior Woman's Club, the Willow Oaks Ladies Golf Association, and the Richmond Women's Golf Association. She loved to play golf and was an 8-time Women's Club Champion at Willow Oaks Country Club. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3p.m. and 6 to 8p.m. Sunday February 17th at Bliley's- Central, 3801 Augusta Avenue with a Christian Vigil Service at 7p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 A.M. Monday February 18th at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. It is with sincere regret that we advise you of the death of

John D. Cejka

John D. Cejka, 78, passed away Monday, February 11, 2008 at Tampa General Hospital after a long illness.He had been a Tampa resident since 1964.  Born in Scio, Oregon on February 2, 1930, he was reared on a farm near Crete, Nebraska along with his nine siblings.  Throughout his life, he always believed in working hard and caring for his family, a trait he instilled in his own children. 

Mr. Cejka was a Vietnam veteran, retiring from the Air Force in 1972 as a Master Sergeant after 23 1/2 years of honorable service.  Following his military career, he was employed with Peninsula Lumber for 25 years, retiring in 1998 so he could care for his wife, Peggy.  He will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed.  He was a faithful member of Port Tampa United Methodist Church.

Mr. Cejka was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Peggy Ann.  He is survived by two sons, John D. Cejka, Jr. and wife, Irene, of Cooper City, Fla. and Terry A. Cejka and wife, Shelia, of Newport News, Va (Funeral Director at Weymouth Funeral Home in Newport News, Virginia); two brothers, Bob and Jim Cejka; three sisters, Mary Lou Cejka, Helen Jochim and Viola Mulraney; three grand- children, seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special devoted friend, Shirley Brown.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 14, 2008 at Brewer & Sons Funeral Home, 3328 South Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa, Fla.  33629.  A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 15th at Port Tampa United Methodist Church by the Pastor Brian Brink. Interment with military honors will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial donations in John’s name to Port Tampa United Methodist Church, 6914 South De Soto St., Tampa, Fla.  33616.

            C. Warren Turner

C. Warren Turner, 79, of Front Royal, VA died on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at the Winchester Medical Center. Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2:00pm at the Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home in Front Royal, VA. Born on September 15, 1928 in Warren County, VA. He was the son of the late Calvin Homer Turner and Janie Moore Licklider. He was a graduate of Warren County High School and Echels College of Mortuary Science. Elsie Pauline (Grogg) Coffman

Staunton – Elsie Pauline “Nanny” (Grogg) Coffman, 71, formerly of Craigsville, died Thursday (January 31, 2008) in Loyalton of Staunton, following an extended illness of Alzheimer’s.

She was born on April 23, 1936 in Goshen, a daughter of the late Wilmer Donald Grogg and Jessie Thelma (Harper) Grogg.  On November 30, 1952, she married the late Rev. Glenn Franklin Coffman, who preceded her in death on August 1, 1994.

Mrs. Coffman worked for many years at the former Genesco L. Grief Company then later worked at Royal Care Assisted Living in Fishersville, and Augusta County School System.  She was a member of the Little River Church of the Brethren in Goshen, where she was very active in many church activities and held several offices including a member of the Adult Sunday School Class.  She was an excellent cook and enjoyed making breads and desserts for her family and many friends.

Pauline is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Glenda C. Western and her husband, Michael of Mount Sidney; a son and daughter-in-law, William S. “Willie” Coffman (funeral director at Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory in Lexington) and his wife, Barbara of Staunton; two grandchildren, Fera Suzanne (Burns) Morrison and her husband, Christopher E. of Swoope and  Whitley Brooke Coffman of Staunton; one great granddaughter, Avery Nicole Morrison of Swoope; five sisters, Sarah Ruth Grogg of Goshen, Willie Mae Hayes and her husband, Donald of Craigsville, Margie Leona Pannell and her husband William of Afton, Martha Helena Pannell of Verona, and Linda Alice Campbell and her husband, William of Raphine; two brothers, Donald Roy Grogg and his wife, Wanda of Fishersville and Danny William Grogg of Verona; a special brother-in-law, John Logan Coffman, Jr. and his wife, Mary Lou of Goshen; a special cousin, Nancy Minter and her husband, Henry of Craigsville; and a number nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Coffman was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Sue Colvin.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, (February 2, 2008) in the Little River Church of the Brethren with Revs. C. Eugene Lenker and Allen C. Lenker officiating.  Interment will follow in the Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.

Active pallbearers will be Christopher E. and Walter E. Morrison, James W. Ramsey, Jessie Andrew Coffman, John L. Coffman, III, Samuel N. Burns, Jr., Henry Minter, and Robert W. Hinkle.  Honorary pallbearers will be William “Bill” Vandevender, and the wonderful caregivers on the SCU Unit at Loyalton of Staunton.

In honoring Pauline’s wishes, there will be no visitation or public viewing.  Her body rests at the Craigsville, Sensabaugh & Zimmerman Funeral Home where those desiring may pay their respects.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Craigsville Weekday Religious Education, c/o Terry & Amanda Adkins, P.O. Box 491, Craigsville, VA 24430.

Funeral Services are being handled by Mrs. Coffman’s son, William, with assistance from Craigsville, Sensabaugh & Zimmerman Funeral Home, and Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory in Lexington.

            Anne Fields Fawbush

Norton, VA – Anne Fields Fawbush, 77, died Wednesday, January 23, 2007 at the Johnson City Medical Center.  A lifelong resident of Norton, she was the daughter of the late Bradley and Nannie (Laney) Fields.  She was a graduate of Norton (Norhi) High School and a member of First Baptist Church in Norton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Fields of Augusta, GA.

She is survived by, Husband, James C. Fawbush; sons, James H. (Jimmy) Fawbush, Norton, VA., David Fawbush and his wife, Beth, Big Stone Gap, VA, Joe Fawbush, a partner in the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, VA, Jon Fawbush, Minneapolis, MN: a grandson, Daniel Ryan Fawbush: a granddaughter, Morgan Brooke Fawbush; and a sister, Jean Falin, Wise, VA. 

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Saturday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home Chapel.  Funeral services will be conducted at 7 PM Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Reverends Lee Kidd and John Ellington, and Dr. Henry Webb officiating.  Graveside burial services will be at 2:00 PM Sunday in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.  Family and friends will meet at 1:30 PM at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

James Robert “J.R.” Buchanan

Buchanan, James Robert “J.R.”, 40, of Richmond died Friday, January 18, 2008.  He is survived by his parents, Charles H. and Phyllis D. Buchanan; his brother, Charles A. Buchanan and his wife Lori; his nephew, W. Chase Buchanan; his niece, Morgan C. Buchanan; and his partner and best friend, Carlos A. Alvarez and his family.  J.R. was a funeral director with Bliley’s where he currently served as Head Manager of their Central Chapel.  He was a past President of the Central District Association of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association (VFDA) and former Board Member for VFDA.  The family will receive friends from 1-3pm and 6-8pm Sunday at Bliley’s Central, 3801 Augusta Avenue. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am Monday at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 823 Park Avenue.  Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions maybe made to Massey Cancer Center, P.O. Leta Maynell Wooddell

Leta Maynell Wooddell past away Friday, January 11, 2008.  She is the mother of Steve Wooddell who is owner of Metropolitan Funeral Service in Alexandria, Virginia. 

Visitation will be Sunday, January 13, 2008 from 4:00pm-7:00pm at Frost United Methodist Church in Frost, West Virginia. 

The funeral service will take place on Monday, January 14, 2008 at 10am at Frost United Methodist Church.  Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Marlinton, West Virginia.

James "Jay" Tolleison Morriss, V

James “Jay” Tolleison Morriss V, 64, of Petersburg died Friday, January 4, 2008.  He was a native of Petersburg born the son of the late J. T. Morriss IV and Sara Taylor Morriss.  Jay was the President of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service.  He received his BA degree from Randolph Macon College in 1966.  As an undergraduate Jay was a member of the swim team, the Varsity Club, and Phi Kappa Sigma, for which he served as president.  He later earned his MS degree from the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in 1969.  He served as a board member of the Society of Alumni of Randolph Macon College from 1973 to 1976 and the Society of Alumni conferred on him the Young Alumnus Achievement Award in 1979.  He has served in leadership positions with numerous civic and charitable groups in the Petersburg area, including the Southside Virginia Emergency Crew, the United Way, the Heart Association, the YMCA, the Historic Petersburg Foundation, Historic Blandford Foundation, Crime Solvers, the Fort Henry Branch of the Association for Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Virginia’s Gateway Region, the Board of Trustees for SunTrust Bank, and the Rotary Club (Past President).  He received the Petersburg Outstanding Young Man Award in 1972.  He has served as president of the Central District Funeral Director’s Association and as a board member and past president of the Virginia Funeral Director’s Association.  He is formerly a trustee of the John T. Wightman/Randolph-Macon College Foundation, a board member of the Friday German, the Petersburg Cotillion, and the Petersburg Country Club, Chairman of the Petersburg Foundation, and member of the board of directors for Contact Tri-City Area.  He is survived by his wife Ann Coleman Morriss; his daughter Meredith Morriss Matthews and husband Patrick; his son J. Tolleison Morriss VI and wife Angie; five grandchildren Kenley, Jackson, Tripp, J.T. and Ann Morgan; two sisters Katherine M. Siddle and husband Paul and Jane M. Garland and husband Raymond; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  The family will receive friends Monday, January 7th from 4 to 6 pm at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service.  A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 8th at 11 am at Christ & Grace Episcopal Church in Petersburg with Rev. David Teschner and Rev. It is with sincere regret that we must advise you of the death of

James L. Paitsel, Sr.

James L. Paitsel, Sr., 84, of New Castle, went to be with his Heavenly Father Friday, January 4, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, Latmer Bud and Luoenia Paitsel, stepmother Virginia Paitsel, an infant son and son James L. Paitsel, Jr. (Jimmy). He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Arlene S. Paitsel; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Michael Huffman; daughter-in-law, Trish Paitsel; grandchildren, Crystal Hickson and husband, Jeff, Justin Huffman and wife, Caitlin, Jamie Paitsel and fiance, Heather, Ashley Harmon and husband, Patrick, Andrew Paitsel, Shawna, Trey, and Taylor Huffman; great-grandchildren, Austin and Sarah Hickson, and Hayli Huffman; stepbrother, Jim Foster; stepsisters, Barbara Huffman and husband, Charles, Genevieve Hannah, Jeanette Huffman and husband, Leslie; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lester Sutphin and wife, Kathleen, Jean Huffman and husband, Bodie, Carolyn Bishop; and special friend, Eddie Martin and wife, Loretta. He was very active within his community. He was an active Funeral Director for 50 years, also owner of Paitsel Funeral Home. He was President of Farmers and Merchants Bank, past President of Blue Ridge Funeral Directors Association, and past President of Virginia State Fair Association. He served in the Navy in World War II. He was a member of VFW Post #4491, a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was one of the founders of the Craig County Rescue Squad and volunteered for the New Castle Fire Dept. at one time. He was also an active member of Craig Valley Hunt Club. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at Paitsel Funeral Home Chapel, with Jim Morris officiating. Interment will follow at Huffman Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 7, 2008.
