It is with sincere regret that we advise you of the death of

 

      Douglas L. Howard

 

Mr. Douglas L. Howard, 68, of Colonial Heights, Virginia passed away at his home Friday, June 26, 2009. He was born in Wilson, North Carolina, September 5th 1940. He attended Saint Leo’s College and was a graduate of the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. He was both a licensed embalmer and funeral director. On November 1, 1989, Mr. Howard retired from the U.S. Army at the rank of Master Sergeant after having served twenty-three years on active duty. At the time of retirement, he was assigned to the Quartermaster Center and School’s Mortuary Affairs Center. With the exception of an assignment as a special agent with the Defense Investigative Service, the majority of his active duty service was with mortuary affairs organizations. Those assignments included several years as a mortuary affairs instructor at Fort Lee; a tour of duty with the U.S. Army Mortuary, Saigon, Republic of Vietnam; an assignment to the U.S. Army Central Identification Laboratory, Hawaii; an assignment to the U.S. Army Affairs Agency, Europe; and multiple assignments to the Mortuary and Casualty Support Division, Casualty and Memorial Affairs Operations Center, Alexandria, Virginia. Following retirement from active duty, Mr. Howard returned to the Army as a Department of the Army Civilian Mortuary Program Specialist assigned to the Casualty and Memorial Affairs Operations Center. He remained with that agency until June 1996 when he joined the Mortuary Affairs Center, where he served as the Deputy Director for the past thirteen years. During his years of service, he played critical roles advising and assisting the Department of Defense, national agencies, and other countries during various crises around the world and is considered one of the leading experts in mortuary affairs.

 

He served his country with distinction in the wake of the events of September 11th, 2001 when he was assigned to the Pentagon as an integral part of the disaster recovery team. He also served on the disaster recovery team in Indonesia following the Tsunami of December, 2004. His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster; the Bronze Star; the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters; the Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster; the Army Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster; the Good Conduct Medal, 7th award; and the Distinguished Instructor Award. As a Department of the Army Civilian employee, Mr. Howard has received three awards of the Commander’s Award for civilian service and the Civilian Meritorious Service Award. His most recent award was the Ancient Order of Saint Martin which was bestowed on him at the Quartermaster Foundation Dinner held at the Lee Club on Fort Lee on Friday, June 19, 2009. The award is the most prestigious award that any one associated with the quartermaster corps can hope to achieve. Mr. Howard was just the twelfth person in the entire world to receive this great honor. Mr. Howard served his community diligently as Chairman of the Transportation and Safety Commission of the City of Colonial Heights. He also served faithfully at the Colonial Heights Baptist Church in various roles including: Chairman of the Finance Committee, Member of the Pastoral Search Committee, and Lead Usher.

 

Mr. Howard is survived by his wife of nearly forty-four years, Jean Hooks Howard; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen Howard and his wife Sharre Moon of Chester, Virginia and Jonathan Howard and his wife Tamala of Hopewell, Virginia; eight grandchildren, Brandon,

 

Kayla, and Kyle Howard, Jessie and Jamie Alexander, Joshua, Andrew, and Jesse Howard; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Cheryl and Cecil Bradley of Wilson, North Carolina, Kay and Randy Medlin of Wilson, North Carolina, and Linda and Billy Manning of Stantonsburg, North Carolina; a brother, Phillip Howard of Washington, North Carolina.; sister-in-law, Christine Bryan of Goldsboro, North Carolina; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins

 

The family will receive friends on Monday, June 29, 2009 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Colonial Heights Baptist Church, located at 17201 Jefferson Davis Highway, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. The Funeral will be conducted at Colonial Heights Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 11:00am with the Reverend Mike Osborne and Chaplain (MAJ) David Green officiating. Harry Leonard Angle

 

Harry Leonard Angle, age 86 of Boones Mill died Saturday, June 20, 2009. He was a longtime and active member of Boones Mill United Methodist Church, serving as Chairman of the Administrative Board, singing in the choir and male quartet. Harry was also a former member of the Boones Mill Lions Club and Isaac's Lodge #29 A.F. & A. M.  until his illness would not allow him to be active. He retired from Whiting Oil Company in 1989 with more than 40 years of dedicated service and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

 

He was born July 17, 1922, a son of the late Peter Marvin and Effie Bowles Angle, and was also preceded in death by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Oden and Evelyn, Ruthford (R.B.) and Raeburn, Lynwood "Sonny" Angle; special nephew, Gary Angle.

 

Harry is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maxine T. Angle; son and daughter-in-law, Michael T. and Selina Angle; daughter and son-in-law, Matilda ("Tillie") and Victor Conner (co-owner and General Manager of Lynch Conner-Bowman Funeral Home in Rocky Mount and VFDA Board Member); one special granddaughter (“little Emi”)which was the joy of his life, Emilee Reecie Conner (whom she called Papa); sister-in-law, Etheleene Angle; brothers-in-law, Zane and Edna Turner, Norwood and Esther Turner; a number of nieces, nephews and other family members.

 

Funeral services will be conducted from Lynch Conner-Bowman Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009 with Rev. Robert Garner and Rev. A. Benjamin Chidester officiating. Margaret H. “Meg” Mountcastle, C.F.S.P.

 

Margaret H. “Meg” Mountcastle, C. F. P., died on Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Innova Fairfax Hospital. Born February 1, 1957, in Virginia Beach, she was the daughter of Clyde Deforrest Hathaway and Margaret Fisher Hathaway. She was preceded in death by her father, Clyde Deforrest Hathaway.

 

Meg graduated from the John Tyler Community College mortuary program. She was the first female president of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association and served on the policy board of the National Funeral Directors Association for six years. She was a member of the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers, appointed by the governor, eventually serving as its president. She served on the board of the American Heart Association and Project Mend-A-House, as well as the finance committee of her church, St. Francis of Assisi, where she was a member for many years. She also volunteered with the “Mommy and Me” program through her church. Meg was the co-owner of Mountcastle Funeral Homes in Dale City, Woodbridge and Alexandria, where she worked for more than 30 years.

 

Meg loved competitive sports and games, having played slow-pitch softball and darts for a number of years. Her drive to win was exceptional, and she was a fierce Scrabble and Yahtzee opponent.  Her favorite past time was boating and traveling in warm environments.

 

She is survived by her husband of 29 years, B. Earle Mountcastle of Triangle; her mother, Margaret F. Hathaway of Culpeper; a brother, Clyde D. Hathaway, III, of Weems; a sister, Susan H. Seavy of Martinsville; a sister, Anne H. Ziemba of Tyner, N.C.; a sister, Barbara J. Hathaway of Culpeper; a sister, Jennifer K. Hathaway of Culpeper; and nine nieces and nephews. She has a particularly special and loving relationship with her step-daughter, Lynne Mountcastle of Cape Canaveral, FL., and her nephew, Clyde D. Hathaway, IV, of Weems and his family.

 

The family will receive friends at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd. Dale City, VA  22193 on Wednesday, June 3, from 2 to 9 p.m. with a Christian Wake Service at 7:00pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 18825 Fuller Heights Road, Triangle VA  22172 with interment to follow at Dumfries Cemetery.

E. Alvin Small

 

E. Alvin Small of Colonial Heights died Thursday, May 28, 2009 in Southside Regional Medical Center. He was born in Petersburg son of the late Edward A. and Dora Witt Small. He was founder and president of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home in Colonial Heights which began service August 29, 1952. He semi-retired in 1990 but never totally ceased his work as a licensed funeral director. He was a past president of the Central District Funeral Directors Assoc. and a member of the Virginia Funeral Directors Assoc. He was the first president and a founder of the Colonial Heights Optimist Club, past governor of the Capital Virginia District of Optimist International, past president in 1958/59 of the Colonial Heights Chamber of Commerce to which he was awarded life membership in 1997, member of Powhatan Starke Masonic Lodge #124 and was awarded a 50 year certificate in 1998, member of Appomattox Commandery Knights of Templar # 6, Royal Arch Chapter #7, member of Acca Temple Shrine, past president of Petersburg Shrine Club, member of Alpha Chapter #1 Order of the Eastern Star, charter member and elder emeritus of Colonial Christian Church having served as chairman of various committees and trustee of the church, former member of the Fort Lee Army Advisory Committee, former member of the Petersburg Salvation Army Advisory Board.

 

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Smith Small; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Herbert and Arline Small and Ralph (Buddy) and Ruth Small all of Colonial Heights; two brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul and Marion Smith of Petersburg and Jim Whetzel of Roanoke; nephews, David Whetzel of Roanoke, Bryan Small of Colonial Heights and Louis Smith of Petersburg; nieces, Susan S. Belcher and Nancy S. Barnes of Colonial Heights.

 

A funeral Service will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2009 in Colonial Christian Church, 295 Dunlop Farms Boulevard, Colonial Heights. The Rev. Clay Boyd will officiate. Burial will be in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George County.

Sidney M. “Sid” Oman

Sidney M. Oman, 81, of the 800 block of Poplar Ridge Drive, passed away peacefully, Monday, April 27, 2009, surrounded by his family and friends.

 

Born in Trenton, New Jersey, he was the son of the late John Brady and Martha Smith Oman and was also predeceased by a brother, Dr. John B. Oman.

 

Mr. Oman was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Chesapeake where he formerly served as Vice-Chairman of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Building Committee and a Sunday School teacher.

Mr. Oman was co-owner, along with his son, of Oman Funeral Homes in Chesapeake. He served three terms as Mayor of Chesapeake and one term as Mayor of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The Sidney M. Oman Cancer Treatment Center at Chesapeake General Hospital was named for him in 1998. He served as President of both the Virginia Funeral Directors Association and the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers.

 

Mr. Oman served as a board member and former President of the Chesapeake Care Free Clinic and the Board of Advisors for the Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways History Foundation and formerly served on the Boards of Tidewater Community College, Monarch Bank, Bank of Tidewater and Chesapeake General Hospital, Chesapeake and Elizabeth City Cosmopolitan Club, Rotary Club, to name a few.

As a civic minded person at heart, he cherished the title “Mr. Chesapeake”.  His love for Chesapeake and Elizabeth City was only superseded by his love in general for all people.

 

His many civic memberships and appointments in Chesapeake and Elizabeth City are too numerous to list.

Some of his many honors include the 1968 First Citizen of Tidewater; 1969 First Citizen of Chesapeake, 1987 Norfolk State University’s Presidential Citation, 1991 Elizabeth City’s First Citizen Award, 1998-99 Virginian Pilot Readers Choice Award for the Best Known Citizen and Citizen Who has contributed the most to the City.

 

Survivors include his wife of sixty-one years, Lillian Callis Oman; his son, Robert M. “Bob” Oman and wife Cindy and his daughter, Susan Lynn Oman, all of Chesapeake.

 

The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Great Bridge Baptist Church, 640 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, VA 23322.  Rev. Randy McMillen, Rev. Tom Mercer, and Rev. Charles Moseley will officiate.  Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.

 

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday and Friday, at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, Virginia 23322.

Georgia Bange

A former schoolteacher in Fairfax County, a licensed professional counselor and businesswoman, Georgia Bange, passed away at her home on Thursday, April 9, 2009. Georgia lived in Loudoun County since 1972, having come to Northern Virginia in the mid "50s.

A graduate of Concord University (formerly College), and the University of Maryland she had done studies at University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, and much continuing education over the last twenty years. Ms. Bange was active in Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg since the early 1970’s as a partner and counselor, doing grief and loss counseling for families as the need arose. She considered her work in support groups for Widowed, Separation and Divorce, and Dealing with Life's Losses her calling. Bange was a founding director of the Bank of Loudoun, which after several mergers is now a part of Wachovia Bank. She was a charter member of the Leesburg Rotary Daybreak, a past state president of the Business and Professional Woman’s organization and a past member of the Leesburg Town Council. 

She was a Board Member of the Loudoun Salvation Army, the Loudoun Restoration and Preservation Society, a past board member of the Industrial Chaplains Ministry, a member of the Boards of the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce, the Red Cross, the United Way and the Victim Witness Program. She was actively involved with the Leesburg United Methodist Church. She was the past president of the Methodist Women and the past chair for the Council on Ministries. She became Lay Leader for the church.

 

She was born in Kimball, West Virginia to Vester and Virginia Sizemore White, who precede her in death. Her only brother, Donald White also preceded her in death in 1998.

 

Bange always said that birth and death were insignificant, in that she was ageless.

Family and friends shared their stories and memories of the life of Georgia at the Leesburg United Methodist Church, 107 W. Market St., Leesburg, VA 20175 on April 25, 2009 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Following the gathering of memories, a memorial service was held in her honor at the church starting at 1:00 p.m.

 

Bange was an owner at Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg since 1972.

Lorene Campbell Singleton

Lorene Campbell Singleton, age 84 of Abingdon, Virginia, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2009 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.  Born June 22, 1924 she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Willie Ellis Mitchell Campbell.   She was a member of the Woodland Baptist Church in Abingdon, Virginia and was a retired cafeteria manager for Washington County Public Schools.        

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Harlow Singleton;  four brothers, James Campbell, Robert Campbell, Marion (Earl) Campbell and Clifford Campbell; three sisters, Gladys Campbell, Edna Roberts and Edith Shortt Carrico; two great-grandchildren, Emily Jones and Parker Jones-Blevins.

She is survived by one daughter, Dana Harlene Scott and husband, David of Johnson City, TN; one son, Jimmy H. Singleton and wife, Linda Hughes Singleton of Cedar Bluff; one brother, John (J.D.) Campbell of Abingdon; one sister, Polly Selfe of Wytheville; three grandchildren, Rene Jones of Abingdon, Danielle Sproles and husband, Josh of Bristol, TN and Mark Singleton and wife, Lisa of Richlands; five great-grandchildren, Laurann Brooke Singleton, Madison Blaire Singleton, Willow Sproles, Abbie Sproles and Corbin Mastrippolito; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 6:00 P.M. Friday, April 10, 2009 at Woodland Baptist Church in Abingdon, Virginia with Pastor Bob McCormick officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at Woodland Baptist Church.

John Thomas Atkins, Jr.

Mr. John Thomas Atkins, Jr. of 1022 Donna Court, Halifax, Virginia died Monday, March 30, 2009 at Medical College of Virginia Hospital.  He was born in Halifax County, Virginia November 16, 1942 and was 66 years of age. He was the son of the late John Thomas Atkins, Sr. and Edna Wooding Atkins and was married to Jeanette Bowman Atkins, who survives.

Mr. Atkins was a Funeral Director for Powell Funeral Home for 45 Years. He was a member of the Dan River Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a Lifetime member of the Halifax County Rescue Squad where he served as Treasurer.  He was a past Treasurer of the Dan River Baptist Association.

It is with sincere regret that we advise you of the death of

W. Edgar “Bud” Smith

W. Edgar (Bud) Smith, 77, of Blue Ridge, Va., passed away after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, March 22, 2009, in a Roanoke hospital, surrounded by his devoted children.

A life long resident of Bedford County, he was the son of the late John W. and Lila A. Smith. Bud, a veteran of the Korean Conflict, proudly served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Northhampton as a cobbler. He was a master carpenter, having helped build countless homes in the area. For approximately 20 years, he was employed by the Brunswick Corporation installing bowling lanes and pin-setting equipment. Bud's passions in life included being with family and friends, gardening, hunting, fishing, and camping at Smith Mountain Lake.

Mr. Smith is survived by his seven children, Deborah S. Boyer and husband, Steve, of Bedford, Janet D. Smith, of Raleigh, N.C., Maggie S. Minnick and husband, Donald, of Troutville, Michael L. Smith Sr. and wife, Debbie, of Chesapeake, Steven O. Smith, of Bedford, Curtis J. Smith and wife, Andrea, of Suffolk, and W. Chris Smith and wife, Kim, of Roanoke. Mr. Smith is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Betty J. Smith, of Roanoke. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, the Rev. Michael L. Smith II, of Zambia, Africa, Gregory S. Boyer, of Bedford, Joshua R. Minnick, of Bedford, Morgan E. Smith, of Vinton, Geoffrey P. Smith, of Chesapeake, Hannah E. Minnick, of Troutville, Sloane V. and Samantha V. Smith, both of Suffolk, Emily M. Smith and Sean C. Smith, of Roanoke; also three great-grandchildren, Tyler Smith, Evie Smith, and Dylan Boyer. Bud is also survived by several nephews and nieces, including a special niece, Donna P. Shumaker.

A service celebrating Bud's life will be conducted 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, from Oakey's East Chapel with Pastor Stafford Frederick officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the staff on floor 10 South at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for the kindness shown to Bud during his illness. O. Wendell Burroughs, age 83, passed away, Wednesday, February 25, 2009 in Russell County Medical Center. Wendell was a native of Northern Kentucky, he had lived in St. Paul since 1957.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church in St. Paul.  He was a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in Virginia and Tennessee and owned and operated the Huff-Cook Funeral Home until 1989.  He was also a member of the St. Paul Lions Club for over 40 years and was a Kentucky Colonel. Wendell was a Veteran of WWII, a member of the American Legion and life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He was a member of St. Paul Masonic Lodge #343, a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Richmond, and was a Shriner, member of Kazim Temple, Roanoke.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. Burroughs and Mamie H. Huff Burroughs; and wife, Mary A. Burroughs; son, Jeffrey W. Burroughs. Survivors include three daughters, Carla Stone, Peggy Bellamy, and Lynda Sutherland and husband Harry Sutherland, all of St. Paul, VA; six grandchildren, Christopher Evans, Jeannie Keffer, Stephen Bellamy, Lori Trail and husband Jeremy, Jeff Bellamy and Mary Beth Glovier; 12 great grandchildren; one sister, Jean Tumbrink, Carrollton, KY; one brother, Dick Burroughs, Southern Pines, NC; also several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 26, 2009 in the First Baptist Church in St. Paul, with the Rev. Mike Moore and Rev. Lee Kidd officiating.  Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 27, 2009 in the Temple Hill Memorial Park.  Those attending are requested to meet at the church by 10:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Jeff Bellamy, Stephen Bellamy, Christopher Evans, Jeremy Trail, Dan Glass and Jim Gibson. The family will receive friends 5 p.m. Until 7 p.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 546, St. Paul, Virginia 24283.

John E. Spiaggi, 58, of Chesapeake, passed away at his home on Wednesday, February 18, 2009.

He is survived by the love of his life and best friend, Tassie Turner, her son, Brandon and granddog, Jaxon; sister, Edith S. Rider and her husband, David; sister, Frances L. Spiaggi; brothers, Joseph C. Spiaggi and his wife, Joyce, Laurence F. Spiaggi and his wife, Sue; numerous nieces and nephews; and many other family and friends, especially, Jose’ Mercado, his “adopted son”.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. and Elva H. Spiaggi; sister, Phyllis S. Kirkpatrick; brother, Phillip. 

John was a U.S. Navy veteran and a retiree of Crofton Diving. Chad Morris "Poppy" Barton, age 73, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, with his family by his side.


Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Ira Runnels and Rachel Tiller Barton. He was a member of Duty View Primitive Baptist Church. Mr. Barton was owner and manager of Haysi Funeral Home for 45 years, owner of Barton's Trucking and Chad Barton Monument Co. He was a member of Haysi Kiwanis Club, Stone Mountain Clinic Board, current president of Southwest Virginia Funeral Directors Association and had served on the Haysi Town Council, local clinic board and bank board. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Channe Barton, Greg (Betty) Barton and Grabern Barton; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Noah and Alpha Colley Yates; a sister-in-law, Bethleen Yates Dingus; brothers-in-law, Bill Mondrage and Bill Edwards; a niece, Tiffany Barton; and nephews, James Allen Yates, Dana Starnes and Lance Barton. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Patsy Yates Barton; three children, Ira Morris (Sandra) Barton, Rocky Dart Barton, and Janet Lynn (Shane) Hillman, all of Haysi; his pride and joy, his grandchildren, Collin Chad and Rachel Grayson Hillman; two step-grandchildren, Brandi Presley and LaRae Boyd; a sister, Louise (James) Compton of Wytheville, Va.; sisters-in-law, Peggy Barton, Pamela Barton, Becky Mondrage, Trula Edwards, Dinah (Willard) Deel, Neva (Dee) Osborne, and June (Fred) Phillips; brothers-in-law, James (Ruth) Yates, Doyle Dingus, and Harold (Eula) Yates; and a host of special cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends.

Robert G. “Bob” Danielson, 76, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 07, 2009.  He was preceded on July 16, 2008 by his beloved wife of 53 years, Dorothy Powell “Dot” Danielson.  He is survived by his daughter, Janice L. Danielson Hazlett; daughter and son-in-law, Sue Ellen Danielson and Laurence F. “Larry“ Spiaggi; sister, Marilyn White; grand-dogs, Missy, Roxy and Chance.

Bob served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War era and was the Owner and Manager of Morrissett Funeral Home from 1969 to 1997. He was a member of Manchester Lodge #14 A.F.&A.M., the Meadowdale McDonald’s Coffee Group and Meadowbrook Country Club.  Bob formerly was active with the Richmond Jaycees, Virginia Funeral Directors Association, Manchester Moose and Dale Ruritan. 

The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Thursday, Feb. 12th at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd.       Thelma Leola Dudley Hartley

Thelma Leola Dudley Hartley, 84, peacefully slipped from the bonds of our world and immediately awoke in her Heavenly home to rejoin her husband, Robert Raymond Hartley and her parents, Thomas James and Susie Mae Goodwin Dudley.

Nana retired from Groendyk Manufacturing of Buchanan after 28 years service and had been a member of Virginia Presbyterian Church for over 55 years. She traveled, played cards, and enjoyed an independent lifestyle until she suffered a stroke in November 1996.  The family wishes to thank all that took part in her care especially Friendship Healthcare Center.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Jane H. and E. T. “Tommy” Wright of Buchanan, Bobbi H. and I. Ray Sloan, of Buchanan (Owners of Botetourt Funeral Homes, Buchanan and Eagle Rock and Secretary / Treasurer of VFDA ); grandchildren, Christopher D. and Barbara G. Wright, Karen F. Spiaggi and his wife, Joyce, John E. Spiaggi and his fiancé, Tassie Turner, Laurence F. “Larry” Spiaggi and his wife Sue E. Danielson (Owners of Morrissett Funeral Home); brother James H. Elva was well known in Cradock as a great volunteer. She founded P.E.P, a social group for young adults with special needs.  She was active in both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, was awarded lifetime membership in the Virginia PTA and was Volunteer of the Year for Portsmouth in the early 80’s.

Her family will receive friends 6 to 8 PM on Thursday at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. GRETNA - Bryant Douglas Moran, age 21, of 610 South Main Street, Gretna, died Thursday, January 1, 2009 the result of an automobile accident. Born March 27, 1987 in Lynchburg he was a son of Deborah Price Moran of Gretna and Bruce A. Moran and wife, Laurie of Gretna. Bryant was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Jean S. Price and his paternal grandfather, Carl O. Moran.

He was an Honor and Merit graduate of Gretna High School. Bryant was an employee of Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, a Mortuary Science student at John Tyler Community College and was a member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents he is survived by two brothers, Austin Moran of Gretna and Jeffrey Bond of Danville; his maternal grandparents, Douglas Price, Sr. and wife, Dawn of Gretna and his paternal grandmother Fran M. Moran of Gretna. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Gretna by Rev. R. G. Rowland and Rev. John Snyder. Karen Kay Dean, 66, of Waynesboro died Sunday, December 21, 2008 at the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville.

She was born February 10, 1942 in Painesville, Ohio, daughter of the late Vaughn and Pauline Kelsey. She was employed with the Waynesboro News Virginian for over 20 years. Survivors include her children and their families, Richard and Susan Pokorny of Jacksonville, FL, Richard and Wendy Dean of Smithfield, VA, Todd and Kelly Dean of Waynesboro, and Donna Dean and Keith Mantel of Charlottesville, VA; four grandchildren, Chad and Torey Dean of Waynesboro and Ryan and Maggie Pokorny of Jacksonville, FL; and special friend, Jane Skaggs of Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at Henry Funeral Home followed by a Funeral service at 2 p.m. in the funeral home Chapel.  Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery in Waynesboro. William Seymour (Buddy) McCoy

McCoy, William Seymour (Buddy), of McCoy, Va. former owner of McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg, Va. died Sunday, December 7, 2008 at Montgomery Regional Hospital, he was 76 years old. 

His love for others lead him to become a licensed embalmer and funeral director, serving many folks from Blacksburg and the surrounding areas for almost 20 years.  In 1976-1977 while attending Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science, he received the Bill Pierce Award for professional attitude toward funeral service.  Buddy was elected to the office of President of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association and served that office from 1994-1995, and was also a past president of the Blue Ridge Funeral Directors Association from 1985-1986, which he proudly served.  Buddy was also President of the Blacksburg Kiwanis Club from 1982-1983 and served as Chairman of the Blacksburg United Way.  He was a founding member of Community Christian Church and also the Long Shop-McCoy Volunteer Fire and Rescue in McCoy, Va. where he was named a lifetime member.  Buddy was also an employee of Electro Tech for 25 years prior to becoming owner of McCoy Funeral Home from 1981-1996.  In his spare time, Buddy had a love for farming and helping family and friends in cutting and baling hay.  He relished the time he had on his John Deere tractor. 

Preceding him in death was his parents, Emmett and Mary Lucas McCoy, his sister, Elizabeth Ann Albert, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Oakley A. and Mary Elizabeth Lilly, a sister-in-law, Janet Lou Emma Lilly Knowles.  Surviving is his wife of 57 years, June Lilly McCoy of McCoy; two sons and spouses, Clifton Lee and Carrie Charlton McCoy of Christiansburg, Leon Allen and Betsy Miller McCoy of McCoy; two daughters and spouses, Vanessa Lou and Kenneth Homer McCoy (Owners of McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg) of McCoy, Rebecca Elizabeth and Mark Anthony Matusevich of McCoy; seven grandchildren and spouses,  Ross and Elizabeth Blount(Funeral Director, McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg), Charlton and Brandy McCoy, Chad McCoy, Heather and Evan Shriver, Amanda and Shawn Cruise, Whitney Matusevich, and Katie Anne Matusevich; three great-grandchildren, Charles Brody Blount, Hunter Wayne Blount, and Peyton Kohl Cruise; a brother and sister-in-law, Beverly Wayne and Ruth Ann Edge McCoy of Max Meadows; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Phyllis Jean and Gene Martin of Ruther Glen, Va., Hilda Mae and Tracy Walker of Charlottesville, Va.; two brothers-in-law and spouse, Sam Knowles of Christiansburg, John Wayne and Anita A. James N. Settle

James N. Settle, 79 of Alberta, VA recently of Greenville, SC died Friday, November 14, 2008 in Greenville, SC. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Evelyn S. Settle, son Kemp N. Settle and wife Kaye, of Pickens, SC, (Kemp is with Stewart Enterprises, Inc. and is a VFDA Past President), a granddaughter Jessica Ford and husband Dan of Stafford, VA, brother Dr. W.K. Settle and wife Bobbie of Sanford, NC, several nieces and nephews, and grand-dog Norwood. 

At the time of his retirement, he was Dean of Humanities and The Arts at Hunter College of The City University of New York.  During his career Mr. Settle had worked for a number of years for the American Council of Learned Societies, a non-profit educational endowment society based in New York City.  Mr. Settle attended Wake Forest College, then in Wake Forest, NC, and UNC at Chapel Hill, where he received his PhD. 

The family will receive friends from 12 noon – 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 13th, at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, Virginia. TRUMP, EDWARD J. “ED”, SR., of Christiansburg passed away Monday, October 06, 2008 in Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was a retired employee of VDOT, with over 30 years of service. Phyllis Waugh Johnson, 69 of Louisa died Tuesday August 26, 2008 at her residence. Born June 18, 1939 in Unionville, VA she was a daughter of the late Arthur C. Waugh and Louise H. Waugh. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Mary Louise Towsey, Virginia Baker and one brother, William Waugh. She retired from Virginia Community Bank as Executive Vice President in 2001, and she was the owner-operator of the Fabric Hut and Gift Gallery in Louisa since 1972.

She is survived by her husband, Robert L. “Bobby Lee” Johnson of Louisa whom was a former manager of Woodward Funeral Home in Louisa and is currently employed as a funeral director at Preddy Funeral Home in Gordonsville, Orange and Madison, VA. Also surviving are her two daughters, Karen Johnson Weaver and her husband Jim of Orange, Paige Johnson Carpenter and her husband Jim of Louisa, grandchildren, Brad and Hunter Weaver, Austin, Claire, and Collin Carpenter, one sister, Iva Mae Coiner of Charlottesville, one brother, Robert Waugh and his wife Bobbie of Artesia, NM, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday August 29, 2008 at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville with interment to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Louisa. Herbert S. “Herbie” Peak

Herbert S. “Herbie” Peak, 81, formerly of Wayne Circle, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 10, 2008.  He was born on July 24, 1927 in Ashland, West Virginia. Herbie served his country in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict.  He retired after 26 years of service. After retiring from the Navy Herbie worked in the Belo Market as a co- manager at the Norview location for twenty years.

Herbie had a zest for life; he was a fun loving character who always had a joke. He spoke seven languages, played guitar, piano, banjo and loved to sing. He greatly enjoyed working on cars and shooting the bull with friends.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Grace Wilson Peak Marsch and his step-father who raised him, William “Goo” Marsch and his second wife, Jeanne Peak.  Left to cherish his memory are his children, Kirk Peak and wife Theresa of Suffolk, Susie Johnson and husband Joe of Chesapeake, Jerry Peak and wife Amy of Chesapeake, Donna Price of Virginia Beach, manager of Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel and secretary of The Tidewater Funeral Directors Association, and Karl Peak of Suffolk; and seven grandchildren, Jessica, Melissa, Kelly, Raven, Aaron, Kristen, and Daniel.

A celebration of his life was held at 11 am on Saturday, August 16, 2008 at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. Burial followed at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens escorted by The Patriot Guard Riders. Full military honors were rendered at the gravesite. Memorial donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans.

Dorthy (Dot) Powell Danielson

Danielson, Dorothy (Dot) Powell, 74, of Chesterfield, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, after a long battle with lung cancer.  She is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, Robert G. (Bob) Danielson; daughters, Janice Danielson Hazlett and her husband, Chuck, and Sue Ellen Danielson and her husband, Larry Spiaggi plus her granddogs, Missy, Roxy and Chance.  Dorothy was the only child of the late Linwood Earl and Estelle H. Powell. A native of Richmond and grew up on 29th Street.  She graduated from John Marshall High School, Class of 1951 where she was the 1950 Fall Band Sponsor.  In addition to being a full time homemaker, Dot supported her husband as he operated the Morrissett Funeral Home, she enjoyed playing cards with family, bowling with the Tuesday Night Fellowship League, playing golf at the Meadowbrook Country Club and cards with the MCC Thursday Morning Women’s Group.  The family will receive friends 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 and 8:00 PM on Saturday, July 19th at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. Clarence B. "Sonny" Baugher

Clarence Boyd "Sonny" Baugher, 80, of Elkton, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Baugher was born July 3, 1928, at the Baugher Family Farm near Elkton and was the son of the late Claude C. and Della Pearl Harner Baugher.

Mr. Baugher grew up working on the family farm and graduated from Elkton High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and "Guarded the Gold" at Fort Knox, Ky., during basic training. He served in the 3rd Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas.

After the Korean War he worked for Baugher Chevrolet in Waynesboro for a number of years. Following the death of his father, he took over his family farm and raised fruits, vegetables, cattle and hay that he sold to local grocery stores and residents. He grew watermelons, cantaloupes and tomatoes by the thousands. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1988 as mail carrier for the Elkton area and continued to farm until his death. He was a member of the Bethel United Church of Christ and the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, and was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox.

On July 1, 1950, he married Mary K. "Kack" Clem, who survives. Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, C.B. Baugher II and wife, Carol, Rescue, Va., Jeff T. Baugher and special friend, Peggy Lam, Massanutten, S.M. "Scott" Baugher, Elkton; one daughter, Sara Ann Baugher and friend, Leanne Kelly, Culpeper; one sister, Ruth Life and husband, Granville, Elkton; nine grandchildren, Jeremy Baugher and wife, Karyn, Megan Baugher and Rodney Spangler, Josh Baugher, Meredith Baugher, Gracie Baugher, Addison "Addie" Baugher, Maggie Baugher, Brittany Terry, Charlie McLeod and wife, Amy; one great-grandchild, Nadia Spangler; best friends, Paul and Janice Hamrick and their children, Bradley and Brenda, Monroe, Ind. He was also preceded in death by siblings, C.O. "Oliver" Baugher, Blanche Jennings, Dennis Baugher, Roy C. Baugher and Charles W. "Zeb" Baugher.

Pastors Dan Bassett and Wayne Wright and Elder Benjamin Cubbage will conduct the funeral service 2 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2008, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton. Burial will follow in the Elk Run Cemetery in Elkton. Graveside rites by the Gooden Brothers VFW Post No. 9292.

Cathryn C. Wiles, 88, widow of Ransom Eugene Wiles, died Friday, June 27, 2008, at NHC of Greenville.

Born in Holly Hill, S.C., she was the daughter of the late L.B. and Emma Kate Parker Crumpton.

Mrs. Wiles was a graduate of Lander College. She was a member of Ebenzer United Methodist Church and a former member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Orangeburg.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Meredyth and David Partridge of Richmond, Va. and Jongy and David B. Ward of Greenville; three grandchildren, Gregg Barrie, Brannon Ward and Parker Barrie; four great-grandchildren; and two nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Charles H. and Grace Crumpton.

R. Eugene Wiles

R. Eugene Wiles of Greenville, SC died at National Heath Care of Greenville on May 25, 2008 following a long illness. He was 87. Mr. Wiles was born in Bowman, SC and grew up as a farmer’s son working hard in the fields during his childhood. He served in the Navy in WWII, graduated from the University of South Carolina on the GI Bill, and worked his entire career as a Senior Civil Engineer for the U.S. government at Shaw Field, SC. He and his wife lived in Orangeburg, SC prior to moving to their retirement home in Greenville, SC. He was predeceased by his parents and two younger brothers. He is survived by his beloved wife, Cathryn C. Wiles, a resident of National Health Care of Greenville; two daughters, Meredyth Partridge (David) of Manakin-Sabot, Virginia and Jongy Ward (David) of Greenville, SC; three grandsons, Gregg Barrie (Heather) of Vail, Colorado, Parker Barrie (Alicia) of Roseville, California, and Brannon Ward (Michelle) of Greenville, SC; four great-grandchildren, Celia and Ryan Barrie of Vail, Colorado, and Malachi and Cameron Ward of Greenville, SC; two sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews. Walter F. “W.F.” Strickler

Walter F. “W. F.” Strickler, 80, husband of Virginia (Rosen) Strickler, of Staunton, died Wednesday morning (April 23, 2008) in his residence.

He was born June 22, 1927 in Augusta County, a son of the late Robert Wallace and Mary Helen (Evans) Strickler.  He was a U. S. Naval veteran of World War II.

Mr. Strickler was a licensed Virginia funeral director and embalmer for 57 years.  In 1969 he became the Assistant Manager of Henry Funeral Home and was made Vice-President in 1984, prior to retiring in 1996. 

He was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, the Middlebrook Ruritan Club, and the Staunton Jaycees. 

In addition to his wife of 58 years, to whom he was married on April 8, 1950, family includes two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark R. and Katherine Lee Strickler of Locust Grove and David M. and Melodie Lynn Strickler of Staunton; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane S. and Roger D. Mooney of Charleston, WV; a brother and sister-in-law, Wallace A. and Elizabeth M. Strickler of Greensboro, NC; a sister, Betty J. Comer of Stuarts Draft; six grandchildren, Mark R. “Skip” Strickler, Jr., Lee Anne Barr and her husband, Jon, Virginia Joanne Strickler, Bethany Kaye Strickler, Marisa  Hope Strickler, and Sarah Virginia Berry Ann and her husband, Nathan; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine A. Shover.

James Andrew Riffe, Sr., 69 of Narrows passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in the late hours of Friday night, April 18th, 2008 at his home.

 

A lifelong resident of Giles County , he was born on November 9th, 1938 and was the son of the late Hedley Lewis and Claire Mabel Tipton Riffe. 

 

From a young age, Jim served his community in a number of different endeavors.  A 1957 graduate of Narrows High School and a Fall 1960 graduate of Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, he served as the President and Manager of Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows, caring for thousands of families in their times of loss.  Jim was a faithful member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows where he taught Sunday School and served as a Deacon, Elder and Chairman of the Board.  He was a charter member of the Giles Lifesaving and Rescue Squad, and served in the Narrows Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years as an Assistant Captain, Chaplain, and a Purchasing Agent.  Jim also served on the Giles County 911 Formation Committee and the New River Community College Board of Directors.  He was the first president of the Narrows Business and Professional Association, a past-president of the Narrows Lions Club, a past-president of the Blue Ridge Funeral Directors Association, and served the Virginia Funeral Directors Association on the Legislative Committee, Disaster Response Committee, and on the Board of Directors.  But he will best be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather to his family and simply as, “Button,” the nickname he lovingly earned from his grandson.

 

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 43 years, Allie Smith Riffe of Narrows; a son, James Andrew Riffe, Jr. and wife Joyce of Narrows; a daughter, Andrea Ann Riffe of Cornelius , North Carolina ; a grandson, Tyler Andrew Riffe; a sister, Rebecca Straley and husband Don of Eggleston; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

 

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008 at 2 PM at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows with The Rev. Charles L. McMullen Jr.

Charles L. McMullen Jr., 85, a resident of 6025 Rocky Lane, Harrisonburg, died March 21, 2008, at Oak Lea Nursing Home, where he had been resident for three months.

Mr. McMullen was born on Dec. 9, 1922, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late Charles L. and Ollie C. Shiflett McMullen.  He graduated from Linville Edom High School in 1941. He served in the United States Navy during World War II being stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. and was a member of the American Legion. Mr. McMullen graduated from the Eckels College of Embalming in 1943 and began working with his family at McMullen Funeral Home as the third generation of that business and he remained a licensed funeral director until the time of his illness.  In 1951, he and his father also began McMullen Funeral Home in Bridgewater and he continued to operate that business along with his son and family until 1990.  In 1994, he received the Golden Funeral Service Award for 50 years service as a Virginia Funeral Director from the Virginia Funeral Directors Association.

Mr. McMullen was a member of the Linville-Edom Ruritan Club and the Greenmount Church of the Brethren.  On Jan. 10, 1944, he married the former Irene Lambert, who preceded him in death on Nov. 9, 2005.  Surviving are a son, William (Bill) McMullen and wife, Brenda, Harrisonburg; two granddaughters, Andrea M. Strawderman and husband, Craig, Mathias, W.Va. and Amber F. Richardson and husband, David, Broadway; a great-granddaughter, Natalee Christina Strawderman.

The Rev. John D. Cejka

John D. Cejka, 78, passed away Monday, February 11, 2008 at Tampa General Hospital after a long illness.He had been a Tampa resident since 1964.  Born in Scio, Oregon on February 2, 1930, he was reared on a farm near Crete, Nebraska along with his nine siblings.  Throughout his life, he always believed in working hard and caring for his family, a trait he instilled in his own children. 

Mr. Cejka was a Vietnam veteran, retiring from the Air Force in 1972 as a Master Sergeant after 23 1/2 years of honorable service.  Following his military career, he was employed with Peninsula Lumber for 25 years, retiring in 1998 so he could care for his wife, Peggy.  He will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed.  He was a faithful member of Port Tampa United Methodist Church.

Mr. Cejka was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Peggy Ann.  He is survived by two sons, John D. Cejka, Jr. and wife, Irene, of Cooper City, Fla. and Terry A. Cejka and wife, Shelia, of Newport News, Va (Funeral Director at Weymouth Funeral Home in Newport News, Virginia); two brothers, Bob and Jim Cejka; three sisters, Mary Lou Cejka, Helen Jochim and Viola Mulraney; three grand- children, seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special devoted friend, Shirley Brown.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 14, 2008 at Brewer & Sons Funeral Home, 3328 South Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa, Fla.  33629.  A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 15th at Port Tampa United Methodist Church by the Pastor Brian Brink. C. Warren Turner, 79, of Front Royal, VA died on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at the Winchester Medical Center. Elsie Pauline (Grogg) Coffman

Staunton – Elsie Pauline “Nanny” (Grogg) Coffman, 71, formerly of Craigsville, died Thursday (January 31, 2008) in Loyalton of Staunton, following an extended illness of Alzheimer’s.

She was born on April 23, 1936 in Goshen, a daughter of the late Wilmer Donald Grogg and Jessie Thelma (Harper) Grogg.  On November 30, 1952, she married the late Rev. Glenn Franklin Coffman, who preceded her in death on August 1, 1994.

Mrs. Coffman worked for many years at the former Genesco L. Grief Company then later worked at Royal Care Assisted Living in Fishersville, and Augusta County School System.  She was a member of the Little River Church of the Brethren in Goshen, where she was very active in many church activities and held several offices including a member of the Adult Sunday School Class.  She was an excellent cook and enjoyed making breads and desserts for her family and many friends.

Pauline is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Glenda C. Western and her husband, Michael of Mount Sidney; a son and daughter-in-law, William S. “Willie” Coffman (funeral director at Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory in Lexington) and his wife, Barbara of Staunton; two grandchildren, Fera Suzanne (Burns) Morrison and her husband, Christopher E. of Swoope and  Whitley Brooke Coffman of Staunton; one great granddaughter, Avery Nicole Morrison of Swoope; five sisters, Sarah Ruth Grogg of Goshen, Willie Mae Hayes and her husband, Donald of Craigsville, Margie Leona Pannell and her husband William of Afton, Martha Helena Pannell of Verona, and Linda Alice Campbell and her husband, William of Raphine; two brothers, Donald Roy Grogg and his wife, Wanda of Fishersville and Danny William Grogg of Verona; a special brother-in-law, John Logan Coffman, Jr. and his wife, Mary Lou of Goshen; a special cousin, Nancy Minter and her husband, Henry of Craigsville; and a number nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Coffman was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Sue Colvin.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, (February 2, 2008) in the Little River Church of the Brethren with Revs. C. Eugene Lenker and Allen C. Lenker officiating.  Interment will follow in the Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.

Active pallbearers will be Christopher E. and Walter E. Morrison, James W. Ramsey, Jessie Andrew Coffman, John L. Coffman, III, Samuel N. Burns, Jr., Henry Minter, and Robert W. Hinkle.  Honorary pallbearers will be William “Bill” Vandevender, and the wonderful caregivers on the SCU Unit at Loyalton of Staunton.

In honoring Pauline’s wishes, there will be no visitation or public viewing.  Her body rests at the Craigsville, Sensabaugh & Zimmerman Funeral Home where those desiring may pay their respects.

Anne Fields Fawbush

Norton, VA – Anne Fields Fawbush, 77, died Wednesday, January 23, 2007 at the Johnson City Medical Center.  A lifelong resident of Norton, she was the daughter of the late Bradley and Nannie (Laney) Fields.  She was a graduate of Norton (Norhi) High School and a member of First Baptist Church in Norton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Fields of Augusta, GA.

She is survived by, Husband, James C. Fawbush; sons, James H. (Jimmy) Fawbush, Norton, VA., David Fawbush and his wife, Beth, Big Stone Gap, VA, Joe Fawbush, a partner in the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton, VA, Jon Fawbush, Minneapolis, MN: a grandson, Daniel Ryan Fawbush: a granddaughter, Morgan Brooke Fawbush; and a sister, Jean Falin, Wise, VA.

James "Jay" Tolleison Morriss, V

James “Jay” Tolleison Morriss V, 64, of Petersburg died Friday, January 4, 2008.  He was a native of Petersburg born the son of the late J. T. Morriss IV and Sara Taylor Morriss.  Jay was the President of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service.  He received his BA degree from Randolph Macon College in 1966.  As an undergraduate Jay was a member of the swim team, the Varsity Club, and Phi Kappa Sigma, for which he served as president.  He later earned his MS degree from the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in 1969.  He served as a board member of the Society of Alumni of Randolph Macon College from 1973 to 1976 and the Society of Alumni conferred on him the Young Alumnus Achievement Award in 1979.  He has served in leadership positions with numerous civic and charitable groups in the Petersburg area, including the Southside Virginia Emergency Crew, the United Way, the Heart Association, the YMCA, the Historic Petersburg Foundation, Historic Blandford Foundation, Crime Solvers, the Fort Henry Branch of the Association for Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Virginia’s Gateway Region, the Board of Trustees for SunTrust Bank, and the Rotary Club (Past President).  He received the Petersburg Outstanding Young Man Award in 1972.  He has served as president of the Central District Funeral Director’s Association and as a board member and past president of the Virginia Funeral Director’s Association.  He is formerly a trustee of the John T. Wightman/Randolph-Macon College Foundation, a board member of the Friday German, the Petersburg Cotillion, and the Petersburg Country Club, Chairman of the Petersburg Foundation, and member of the board of directors for Contact Tri-City Area.  He is survived by his wife Ann Coleman Morriss; his daughter Meredith Morriss Matthews and husband Patrick; his son J. Tolleison Morriss VI and wife Angie; five grandchildren Kenley, Jackson, Tripp, J.T. and Ann Morgan; two sisters Katherine M. Siddle and husband Paul and Jane M. Garland and husband Raymond; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  The family will receive friends Monday, January 7th from 4 to 6 pm at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. James L. Paitsel, Sr., 84, of New Castle, went to be with his Heavenly Father Friday, January 4, 2008. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Arlene S.
